So my old Craftsman finally gave up the ghost and leaked a ton of oil on the ground before refusing to lift any more. A new power unit is basically the same cost as a new jack from Sears so I can't see fooling around with that...

Are there any jacks out there that arent $300-400 that will do an OK job without spilling their guts in a couple years? Maybe the best idea is to just buy a junky $75 one with the idea that I'll have to replace it in a few years...

If its real old, say '70's vintage, and green with white handle, its made by Blackhawk and a real good jack that can be easily overhauled.

This same discussion comes up rather frequently. I don't work for NAPA, but I'll repeat my post as written in an earlier thread, in late July. See below.

As already note, Shinn Fu is making, right here in the good ole USA, the Lincoln designed jack, and putting the Hein-Warner name on it, as they apparently own the rights to both of these names.

I've mentioned it before, and I'll say it again, take a hike to NAPA, and look for a stack of big boxes, I saw them just the other day. A jack and two jack stands. Whole thing is $199. This is a good sized jack, comparable to my old '70's Sears, made by Blackhawk jack.

From my post in the February thread about this, which was a copy of my post in last September's thread about this............

I don't care for Chinese but for some things, the choices are limited, and they do make some good stuff occasionally. NAPA has a special deal going, a 3-1/2 ton floor jack and two "4" ton jackstands for $199. I saw a whole stack of them in my NAPA store the other day. I bought this same deal about two years ago.

Its this jack here, which is regular $269

and these jack stands, which are regular $76

For $199, a real bargain, even if their regular prices are inflated, the $199 is a deal. The jack is large and has a wide spread between the casters and wheels, very stable.

I called my NAPA store and the part number for the special is 899-6420. This shows a jack only, but if you read, it shows "stand, rachet action height" a weight of 138 lbs (stands and jack) and a price of $273.99 (they are up to $364 on this package now). My store in Newnan, GA has a whole stack of them for $199 and I think this is a promotion price.

This is a large jack, not one of the minature floor jack wannabee's. The stands are well made and much heavier, thicker steel than some identical looking stands I've seen elsewhere. Quality of this stuff does vary in China, depends on what the purchaser specifies. You want heavy steel... we give you heavy steel......

I use this jack alot, my car, and truck, my lady friends car for oil changes, tractors, and any and everything else...... no problems, going on three years now.

I second that. I bought mine in the late '70s, and it's still going strong. In fact, it is my "go to" jack. I even prefer it over my Lincoln. I remember that the shop where I worked at the time bought 8 or 10 of them. The only problem with them was that the other mechanics liked the green craftsman jacks so much that they started taking them home, and never returned them. I can't recall any of the Lincoln, Hein Warner, or Walker jacks dissapearing.

I have one of the old green/white Cman jacks and they are great
the newer Cman stuff is junk and I would only buy one if it was a total bargain.

I have the HF long frame and the standard (that looks similar to the cman) and they have served well

I second the NAPA thing. I've seen them and if I were in the market for a new jack, I'd definitely put the NAPA one on my list. They also go on sale from time to time...

I have the HF long frame 2.5 ton, and love the damn thing. It has worked flawlessly, effortlessly, and with no leakage or settling.

I can't say the same for everybody I know with newer Craftsman jacks, lots of trouble.

I have a three ton HF. Paid about $55 on sale. I treat it as disposable. Went through three C-m jacks in about two years, they are junk. I dont know why, but i cant seem to bring myself to buck up for a good jack. It goes against by philosophy of buying the best tool (with in reason) i can afford. I guess if it lifts the vehicle, its fine. Now jack stands? They are a different matter. I dont go cheap on those. In fact some times I double up on them just cause I am paranoid.

I don't know if it's the same in other states, but out here in Ca.,NAPA will give a 10% discount on some items if you whip out your AAA card at the counter. It's worth asking about.I bought a nice Gearwrench set when they first came out,the discount came in handy.
