I'm thinking about getting a heat pump for my garage for heat in the winter and AC in the summer. I live in central NJ where it rarely gets below 30* in the winter and when it does, I don't go in the garage. I have a portable propane forced air heater that I use to heat up the garage before I work. Usually takes only 15-30 minutes to heat and lasts for a few hours before I need to heat again. I would probably use that to get the heat up in the mornings and then use the heat pump to maintain. If I could set the min low enough (like 45*) I might use it to maintain a minimum heat in the garage for when I know I'll be working in it several days in a row. I usually like it around mid 60's in the winter and would like it around high 70's (really just get rid of humidity) in the summer. In the summer time it gets pretty hot and humid, usually in the 90's. This is the main reason I want a heat pump is to cool off the garage in the summer.
I have a 22'x22' garage with 11' ceiling. It is well insulated, has one large garage door and one side door, no windows.
I'm considering an air source ductless mini-split heat pump to keep down size and installation costs, but will consider other options if they make sense. I don't have a lot of room inside or outside for large or multiple units. Initial cost, location, size, and maintenance are concerns for what system I get. Would prefer something that has a low minimum temp (freeze guard prolly would be sufficient) and I don't need a heat strip as I will use the propane heater for aux heat. Would like to get something that qualifies for tax credit (learn me more about tax credits.
)
What size would you recommend, and what make/model?
This is the space I will be heating/cooling. I put insulation board over the top of the stairs to separate the loft from the garage. I'm only concerned with heating/cooling the downstairs garage section, not the loft.
Thanks.
