I've got a nice petzl head lamp, just got an awesome led lenser p7.2 but what I cant find is a lantern type design for camping. Something that can sit on the floor, be carried around by the wife or hang up when necessary.
I cant find anything other than cheap crappy ebay versions..

I've had this one for three years, and like it a lot. It's small -- about the size of a Red Bull can -- and the LEDs are warm white, more like an old lantern than the blue-white of many LEDs. Not super bright -- it won't light the entire campsite -- but for simple, minimalist camping it's perfect.

JohnyMac, depending on your budget, you may want to look into:
http://www.goalzero.com/accessories-lights
I do not camp, so no personal experience, however, a few of my family members do and they utilize this companies products. Depending on your needs, you may also want to look into this product they offer (it's out of stock on their site, but can be had from other vendors):

www.goinggear.com is the place I generally purchase my handheld lighting from, 5 star service and knowledge and they carry goalzero products, if you choose that route.

The Costco around here has a Coleman LED on for around $20. I actually just got a Defiant lantern from Home Depot last week that was in the clearance section for $7.50. It is also an LED with a Bluetooth speaker. I didn't really need it but for that price I figured what the heck.

I've used one of these fairly extensively for camping. Very good battery life.

I kind of got away from laterns for camping though, there is no single latern that's going to throw enough light for every area in your campsite. I usually just use my headlamp and then turn it off when I don't need to see small stuff, you'd be surprised how bright pitch black can be when you stop trying to fight it.

In a tool magazine I just got, I see Streamlight is coming out with one, might be what you're looking for.

Check out the Milwaukee m18 lantern, very nice, and it has a USB port for charging your phone while camping

Check out the Streamlight Seige lanterns. They come in two sizes and are getting rave reviews. I'm planning to order the larger version before my next camping trip.

I used Coleman lanterns either propane or gas for camping most of my life. However I really like the Feuerhand lanterns Its not a bright harsh light like the Coleman.

I have had this one for a few years as well, and think it's great for the money.

Start trolling Ebay for one of these manly 8D cell Coleman Northstar lanterns to pop up. They have been out of production a few years but still surface on Ebay from time to time. Its 12v and can run off your car battery in a pinch via alligator clips.

Just seen the streamlights... seem pretty reasonable value. Seeing how most people think the hand held versions of their streamlights are so good they want to marry them, I think it might be the way to go!!!
It looks like they are collapsable too which is handy

Probably be hard for you to get but I've got two union pacific lanterns my brother got me. He's a conductor. They are really great man. Compact and a lantern and beam setting. Led bulbs. They use them on the track daily. I'm sure you can find one on eBay. I know they're are plenty of others out there but I do love these ones.

Maybe it's the nostalgia of when I was a kid with my dad and brothers but I LOVE THE COLEMAN green camp fuel lanterns.

I use the M18 & M12 lanterns multiple times per day....everyday! I like them a lot & the light output is excellent. I can hang them, stand them up, lay them down, drop them, etc. Absolutely zero problems with them.

Here is the video I did....I highly recommend them!

I've had so much joy already out of this old petromax 829 petroleum lantern.
€20 at an army surplus, came with a bunch of new mantles, the hood and a repair kit. Puts out more light than I've ever seen out of a gas or electric lantern, will easily light a whole camping spot. Bit noisy though, but fun to **** around with:thumbup:

Nice vid Woodstock...the 18v unit looks great and if I wasnt a makita guy I might go for it, the makita offerings are no where near as good. My only issue is I don't really want to carry a charger for when it goes flat..
I do have a full 12v set up with a 240v inverter in my camping rig but I like the versatility of just needing some standard batteries should it get left on overnight. .
