It looks like Santa might just bring me a planer. I've looked hard at the Dewalt 3 blade. Any pros and/or cons or recommendations please.

Ridgid R4331 w/ riser lock is considered the best value considering performance paired w/ a lifetime warranty, while the Dewalt DW735 (4 post) is considered the highest quality unit. Both are obviously a bench top model.

Everything else in that category is basically on the same (lower)level regardless of mfg.

Its expensive but the festool has a twisted type blade, which according to some carpenters i know who have them, is the greatest thing ever...

I got a Dewalt 735 on a Zoro promo a while back and love it. I've run a lot of pine and enough oak to build an entire set of kitchen cabinets. I read a lot of older reviews on the blades not lasting, but it seems that issue has been resolved since then, and you can always splurge for carbide-tipped blades down the road. You should get the table extensions for it as well though.

Are you looking only at portable desktop type planers? There are some good small heavyweights around, used. FS35 Mini Max. The table up mode is planing mode, table down mode is a jointer. Made in Italy.

Yes I have one, not powered it on in years.. Still love it though.

DW735 has a lot of upgrade options and does a great job. I have one. Yes, the blades do dull a little quick, but if you can get past that I have zero issues with that unit.

I have a DW 735 and it has been a good machine. I've run maple, cherry, walnut and soft woods with no problems. It is definitely a good idea to get the table extensions or make your own in-feed/out-feed tables. The blades are 2-sided so if they get dull, just pull it out and flip it over.

The dewalts are about the best portable planer you can buy.

I've got a 735 as well, and recently upgraded to the Byrd Shelix head. The head costs nearly as much as I paid for the machine many years ago. My only complaint on the head, is that I didn't buy it sooner...

I have the older dewalt lunchbox planer and have been happy with it for now. I'd obviously like a large, cast unit but I don't have enough room or run it enough to justify the cost.
