Hey all,

My 2015 6.6 Duramax just told me I have 90 some miles until it starts limiting my speed.

I had previously diagnosed a bad def tank heater, code P21DD. Ordered the heater a few days ago, just arrived yesterday. Planning to swap the part asap, but I will need to clear the “service exhaust system” codes.

I just have a simple code reader, a Matco Code Advisor, which AFAIK will only clear a check engine light.

Is there an off the shelf scanner I can buy for a reasonable amount of money that will clear this code or do I just need to take it to the GM dealer? I am willing to spend a few hundred bucks but not a few thousand.

Any diesel mechanics feel free to chime in.

I have a line on a fair deal on a Solus Plus, anyone know if that will work?

My uncle also owns an Autel MaxiCOM MK808S if anyone has any experience with one of those.

I was able to force a regen on a duramax with my MX808S, I think there was a reset in the DPF service function.

The Autel might work. I haven't used that model. Certainly the higher end Autels should.

There isn't really a simple reset exactly. It's probably going to have to do a Reductant Quality test. There are some manual tests that have to be done, during the same key cycle, first to enable the test to actually work.

This is technically for the earlier years, but still gives some good pointers. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2013/SB-10063393-2273.pdf

You may have to subscribe to GM service info for the day or Alldata to go thru the whole procedure.

I usually use Gm's GDS2 for this. This is a good J2534 interface. https://www.jerseydiscounttool.com/product-page/topdon-rlink-j2534

However, i think the Launch family Chinese scanners should work. This is one I use alot: https://mythinkcar.com/products/thinkdiag-2
This one is also recommended: https://www.jerseydiscounttool.com/product-page/topdon-topscan-pro
These time out after a year, and are almost as expensive to resubscribe as to buy. Thinkcar has some life time tablets available now that are supposed to be a good value and you wouldn't have to install the software on a phone or tablet. Gearwrench has a "pro" dongle that is free lifetime updates as well. These are all "Launch" family software.

Even professional techs have to ask for help on the pro forums on these sometimes. It can be quite a rodeo.

If I can’t get it done with what’s available to me for a reasonable amount of money, I’m just going to drive it to the dealer and have them do it haha

You need to look for something that can do an SCR reset. In Cummins insite, it's usually an aftertreatment maintenance reset, for Navistar stuff, it's just SCR Error reset. I haven't done enough emissions stuff on CVs at work to remember what they're called in GDS2
