*recommend me an air compressor*

I have been looking for one, but it's really hard to pick. And yes, I am somewhat picky.

It will be just for my garage. ( no Paint spray-gun use)

one that i can use SO 3/8 impact or 1/2 for couple hours, not all day long.

Well there are MANY more (WAY MORE) knowledgeable people on here than me, But I would say either of those compressors will easily do what you want. Fr what its worth, I think they are both probably overkill for your use (not that thats a bad thing). But I think you could look in a lower price bracket if all you want is to run an impact wrench. Lowes and HD both sell a pretty fair 30gal oil lubed unit that will easily keep up with an impact and most other air tools for at least moderate use. I believe they are both around the $400 mark new, I picked one up used for $150.

In my opinion, the Snap On compressor you linked to is a toy. Forget that one and look somewhere else. I can't find enough info on the other one to make a decision. If you want a toy compressor, look at the 110v ones. If you want to do serious work it needs to be 220v, and it needs to put out some serious CFM. Tank size isn't important like CFM.

He wont need a huge amount of CFM to run impact wrenches and the like. A 110 will do just fine for that (mine is 7@40 and 5.7@90 PSI).

How the heck is 7SCFM @125PSI considered a toy

A 7cfm will keep up with intermittent use of an impact wrench, but it will struggle with a DA sander, a paint gun, a die grinder, and steady use of most other air tools. Many of those tools are rated at 8cfm, and that is their no load rating. Under load, they easily double their air consumption.

I don't think either of those compressors linked would be worth $700. That Cornwell is a single stage. Probably not any better than a cheap compressor you can buy at Lowes for $400-$500 new. Don't over pay on a compressor just because of a name like Snap-on, Cornwell, Mac, etc.. They all are Chinese pumps. If you want a good name brand compressor look for Quincy, Curtis, Champion. Really search GJ well. There is a ton of compressor info on here. And be patient on CL there are some really good deals to be had right now.

because the smallest REAL air compressor (belt driven motor and pump) are 5 hp's that make 15-17 cfm at 100 psi. anything smaller is just a toy.

Chicago Pneumatic's RCP series 3.5 hp and under are really good REAL air compressors just search Chicago Pneumatic RCP-220P (2hp 20 gal) RCP-226VP (2hp 26 gal) or RCP-3561V (3.5hp 60 gal)

So my CH 6 HP, 60 gallon tank with 9.4 CFM at 90 PSI is just a toy? Thanks for the info, I'll have it out at the curb by garbage day!

dont get me wrong. I am not bashing Big Box Compressors, but there is a big difference between and campbel hausfeld "6hp" direct Drive, and A Quincy QT-5, a BIG diff.

addition: Mainly the actual hp, and the ACFM, no one finds it odd that the larger 6hp CH doesnt provide half as much cfm as the 5hp Quincy? direct drives are great for nailing, and light automotive. the only compressor i have is a little pancake, but we are comparing apples and oranges here.

You guys crack me up! Sure there are better compressors out there. But from what I understand the OP is looking for a home shop compressor to do only occasional work with impact wrenches. I really dont think 15-17CFM is necessary for that...in fact, I know its not. If your using it for a living, sure. He said he will not be painting. I guess if you just really want to spend the coin go for it, but there are much less expensive options that will easily accommodate your needs for a long time to come.
