Recommend me a bench grinder/polisher

Looking to upgrade from the small one I have now. Not necessarily replace, since the small one is good for sharpening knives and such. Mainly looking for a 6” or bigger for putting polishing pads on to polish tools and automotive trim/parts.

What is a good brand? I’d prefer USA made, but if there is a great one with a different COO, I’d consider it. Budget is about $300 give or take.

I use an old 8-inch Wissota bench grinder as a buffer, and it works well for many things. But if I was looking to spend $300 on a replacement I would pursue a variable speed version. Plastics need a slower speed while metals need faster speeds.

The ideal scenario would be to find an older USA 3-phase grinder/buffer and install a VFD to run it on single phase power. But it might take a while for that to happen. If in a hurry, try a modern (imported) variable speed grinder similar to this:

You might consider used. I bought these two Made in USA Baldor and Red Wing polishers for under $100 Cdn each.



They might be a bit small for what you want to do though....

You need variable speed for different materials. Have a Baldor 412B 3 phase with a VFD, used, off of Ebay.

I just bought the 1hp 2 speed buffer from Eastwood. It is in the $200 dollar range. On low it is actually only 1/2 hp, unlike the Baldor 2 speed that uses a better motor that is 1hp at both speeds but it is not Baldor money, either. It is made in China but I have no issues with it. It has 3/4" shafts and they call it 10". The similar current rating Baldor also has 3/4" shafts and the call it 8". The smaller the wheels the lower the surface speed. I wanted the lower speed for plastic. I just mounted it on a heavy Dayton cast iron pedestal base, that I hope will be OK without bolting it down. The Eastwood economy base is a toy but probably OK bolted down.

Find something Baldor and understand the difference between 1725 and 3450. I like the three phase with a VFD idea
