Recommend me a bigger tool box

I need a bigger tool box I was looking at this one, so it will give you a rough idea on my price range. I know craftsman isn't was it use to be, but any suggestions would be appreciated.

How big are you looking to/can you go? There's usually more value in used the bigger you go. For example, I was trying to find one of the 3-drawer Griplatch middle sections to hang under my cart, the used ones on CL were a couple bucks less than Sears since they're so cheap to begin with.

I got a Husky/Waterloo 40" top & bottom off CL for $300 or $400 (I forget now) a couple years ago. It's at least as good as older Craftsman, and much better than newer ones.

With that kind of budget you wont get much of anything, new or used

In that price range, size is your enemy. Ebay and Craigslist, and don't be afraid to drive a little ways for a deal.

Husky boxes are like the heavy duty craftsman.. they got some good clearance boxes.. shoukd be able to find one semi local. 40" top bottom combo for three hundo. 26" for like two hundo. The 26" heavy duty cman boxes (top bottom and mid) is like $325 and you can find ways to save more on shopyourway ($30 off $300+ I think ane maybe more for signing up an account)

Depending on exactly what you're going to be storing...I'd recommend going with one of the HF carts. Both will offer similar drawer space (if not more) and both will have a bottom shelf for larger items. They're better built and are in the same price range.

I have a Craftsman rally sport 3 drawer right now, so I guess I just need a bottom for it to expand.

If you could double your budget, I'd go with the smallest red US General cabinet at HF.

Go get a couple filing cabinets off of CL. Seriously.

I've had that set for about 20 years. It isn't very big at all. The drawers in the bottom cabinet aren't strong enough for their size and I never have found a good use for the bottom space.
Sets of that size usually don't go very high at auctions around here.

One first topic to put under the spotlight is the sentence ""I know Craftsman isn't what it used to be""""""
For years, Craftsman has marketed around five different "price levels" or grades of toolboxes...... Their John Q. Homeowner line can be thought of as something to store a paintbrush, claw hammer, a few screwdrivers and basic mechanic tools.... The box you are looking at is basically this price level with the addition of ball bearing slides.. The drawers have a weight rating of only 30 pounds.. The total weight of that box is only 71 pounds....basically a pile of tin.

They DO market better boxes,, way up to Commercial Grade.. and everything in between.... The in between group is where I would suggest if looking to purchase a box from Craftsman.

The fellows who suggested looking for a good used box,,,, Good, solid idea..

This is a great setup for $170 (remember price point nay sayers).





The problem with these specific units is they're discontinued and are getting scarce. That said, even if you get an in stock box, they're also a good value.

Oh, and most of the 26" boxes are made by Waterloo, so parts are available.

As the above post mentioned, your best bet to stay around this price range new would be the HD boxes. These are the cheapest I have seen to compare with the Craftsman's at a lower price range. In some cases you may find some decent Craftsman boxes for a homeowner at Sears Outlet. Some Sears have been putting ball bearing boxes on clearance that are older models. One locally has a 6 drawer black ball bearing for $163. Still you can get a better deal at HD if you can find the one listed above. Several members have gotten decent boxes for a homeowner at HD lately.

If you scour Craigslist often, you're bound to find a used box on there. Last year I bought a USA made Craftsman bottom, intermediate, and top box for $100. It has the friction guides, but that sucker is solid.
