Hi all.

Looking for a dehumidifier for the upstairs of the home. Any suggestions? Area is about 1000 sq ft.

Thank you.
Ivan.

We've had surprisingly good results with the Honeywell units on Amazon.

They pull a LOT of moisture out of the air here in the armpit of the USA... and quickly! They don't lose their settings if the power trips. They do their job, and kick into standby mode where they periodically sample the air and start up again when necessary. I've had one rocking and rolling in the garage for three years now.

The smaller home dehumidifiers are almost all made by the same manufacturer in China, just with different features added, and different housings.
There was a recall due to fire risk of dehumidifiers that showed how many of the brands came from one manufacturer.

LG was an exception. Those are made in Korea.
They had a similar recall before the Chinese dehumidifier recall, and changed the outer housing to mostly steel.
I use one and it seems to work well.

Honeywell doesn't honor their warranty. Since they're all chinese made, by a small number of makers (mostly midea, I think), buy any energy star rated one of suitable capacity based on price, availability, merchant support, or whatever. Don't pay for a brand name that's worthless.

Do note that the rating for capacity changed a couple years ago (reduced the test temperature) to more accurately reflect normal usage. As a result, the capacity numbers are smaller than they used to be.

IMO, the only thing worse than humidity, is a dehumidifier that has to be manually emptied.

Get one with a drain line and pump.

We have a Soleus that has served us well in the basement. For whatever reason Menards does not carry them any more.

Worth the extra money to not constantly have to empty the bucket.

Last one I bought was a Pelonis.
It looks exactly like a Midea. Came from Menards.
They claim a 3 year warranty on it.I went several places and found the exact, carbon copy unit with different names.
We'll see if it holds up. I'm on my second.
First was DOA out of the box.
However, all has been good on the second.

I got the Media cube from Home Depot. its been working great for the past 18 months. what I like about it is that it has a huge storage bin so you don't need to empty as often but it does get heavy when full. I think it holds around 4 gallons. It has a app for iphone that you can program its use. I have it turn on twice a day and run it for 4 hours in morning and 2 at night. been working great. The app is really convenient that you can set up schedules so its not running all the time. I can go 2-3 day between emptying the water. there is hose discharge with pump but I don't have it near someplace close to use that feature so its manual emptying for me.

if I ran it constantly I would have to empty the bin in under 24 hours which gives you an idea of how much water this thing pulls out of the air.

Fair enough, but the things work. Work well... and after four years of being left "on" 24/7. I lead the drain hoses either under the garage drawer, into the basement sump, or into a sink. I haven't had to touch them, and I've gotten lax about washing the filters recently.

We're new homeowners, so we've been through a few brands that left us wanting.

Consumer Reports just covered this a few months ago. Midea did very well in the reviews. I doubt that all the Chinese ones are coming out of the same factory, but even if they were, that doesn't mean they're all the same quality. If they were, the CR reviews would've been a toss- up, and they weren't.

The same CR that gave the Corolla a great rating and knocked on the Geo Prism?

I'm using homelabs dehumidifier since buying my house early 2023. 1500 sq ft area and it works quite well. Please try to research it. I think it will benefit you, and Moiswell's dehumidifier is also a good choice. I bought it here, you can refer to: https://bestcrawlspacedehumidifier.com/

I have a 5yo GE unit that's served me well in the basement and still going. I have a 1yo Midea in the garage that's bricked from a welded relay contact on the compressor. Thankfully the external thermal protection means it didn't burn my building down.
