Hi all,

Looking for a good scribe(metal). Starret has been letting me down lately.

Recommendations?

How's it letting you down? Point is dulling on you? I have a mitutoyo retractable scribe. Carbide and saves your pocket. The body is plastic but that's handy actually because it's nice and light.

I been using the fowler retractable ones for years now. No issues. Sharpen the tip maybe once a year. The entire scribe is made in a few pieces so they get loose over time. Thats the only flaw I see.

Had one replaced. It's not as sturdy as my old one. Just feels cheap in my hand. Was one of those ones that unscrewed into 2 pieces.

It's sad to say but I think Starrett might be cheapening their tools up. I bought a Starrett automatic center punch a couple months back and was unimpressed to the point that I returned it. I mean immediately after pulling it brand new out of the red Starrett box I was disappointed, it just felt cheap.

What I do with those is cut part of the tip that goes into the mandrel. What that does is stiffen the tip up so that it doesn't flex and break so easy.

Starrett probably has their scribes farmed out like their tape measures, box cutters, and stuff like that.

Actually, most of Starrett's offerings are made overseas now...the "good" stuff comes from Brazil now...

I gave up on Starrett years ago...check Mituyoto, Brown & Sharpe or find NOS offerings of better quality on EBay...Avoid Fowler anything...

Levels from Dominican Republic, not saying they can't build nice stuff. The last Starett level I had, had floaties floating around in the bubble liquid.

Stabila from now on.

Any other scribe recommendations?

A quick check on EBay showed multiple choices, incl. 80's era Starrett scribes...US made...just depends on your budget...

I also have this one from PB Swiss, also very nice, very thin carbide tip for precise scribing close to the edge of the ruler

PN 2157A11 $5.99. Probably not the best out there, but cheap enough you don't cry when it falls out of your shirt pocket and you lose it.

I also grind down the backside of the carbide tipped insert. This reduces it's stickout when in the holder and lets you really bear down on it without problems.
