Recommend me some hammers

I am in the market for a set of hammers. I want to buy somethig that will last my lifetime (which should be doable because they will be used once a month at most).

I am after:
Ball peins from 8oz to 32oz
4lb club hammer
Soft faced hammers

I have been considering the Estwing hammers but I have never used a steel handled ball pein hammer and they don't quite seem right. Would I be better off sticking with vaughn?

I'd go with Vaughan for the ball peins. As for the others, there are numerous ways you can go. For non-mar, I also went with Vaughan.

Yes to the Vaughns. Or Eastwing. I spent the same on 1 Vaughn ball peen ($20) as I could have bought a set of 5 at Harbor Freight.

But then, every time I used it, I would have had to look at the "China" embossed in the head.

I like Lixie hammers for soft face. Any average or better quality steel shaft dead blows, though wood feels better, but for once a month who really cares so long as they last and steel shafts will. Home s depot sells some Husky dead blows for not much money and they have a lifetime warranty, worth a look too.

Craftsman ball peens are rebadged Vaughn hammers. I'd go with those simply due to the ease of warranty.

HF, ultra cheap, work fine, can't say as I feel the need to read the country of origin prior to hitting something.

OTOH hammers and punches are things I keep an eye out for at yard sales, etc., but so far the handles are what gets beat to death, so I haven't bought any used hammers, just punches etc.

Not sure if that's what you meant by soft faced, but these suckers are keepers. Best quality I have ever seen and the price is pretty competitive I think. I'd buy them again in a heartbeat.
