OK, I have a question for everyone recommending these rather pricey wrench brands like Proto, Wright, etc.

where is a smokin deal on one of those brands for a big set, say from 1-1/2" to 2-1/2"

every time I have seen them, they are some crazy price like $700 or $1000, etc.

I got a whole Wright set from 1" to 2 1/2" on CL that looked unused for 200 bucks. Paid the same for a full unused Wright 3/4 drive socket set with ratchet, extensions, etc. You have to read the postings every day and be ready to act. Wright is #1 in my book.

The wrights are great as previously mentioned. Proto too. All the wrenches I have used in those sizes have been satin finish. I dont know if they even make them full polished. If they do you probably wont find them used for a while. I prefer satin finish anyways.

I am looking for a good value on wrench set that goes up to 2 1/2 with a polish finish. Tool truck brands are out. This set will be on a tool truck, so if a wrench needs to be cut for a specific task I don't want to wack up snap on stuff. What do you fellas think?

Unlikely that you are going to find a "Good value" on a "wrench set" in that size range. If money or time is a issue I would fill the need right now with a HF/northern or whatever you have at your disposal. I built my set a piece or two at a Time and it can be done very reasonable via Ebay/CL if you put the time in. I prefer the stem style of wrench from Wright, which makes up the majority of mine. Ive seen buckets full of imported broken bigger sized wrenches, I'm sure I have a couple in the shop as far as that goes, being bigger doesn't mean something is immune from carnage.

I've got harbor freight's "jumbo" and "super jumbo" wrench sets. Together, they cover up sizes from 1-3/8" all the way to 2-1/2", in 1/8" increments. I've been fairly abusive to them, and have not broken one yet, although there are limits to how much I am willing to trust them.

Northern tool and supply has wrenches also up to 2 1/2", I believe, and they are rumored to be a little heavier. They are a little more costly, but still well toward the cheap end of the spectrum.

For wrenches that might have to be cut up and remodificated into a special custom tool to finish a job, I would not have anything other than this HF set, or the same from Northern. Unless circumstances are such that my employer picks up the replacement cost of a chopped tool, or it's possible to pass that cost on to the customer (necessary consumable supplies in order to complete job!), there's no way I'll cut up an expensive wrench.

what does that mean? :dunno:

It means the wrench has a round/tubular beam like a breaker bar basically.
