Recommendation for welding jacket

I'm not working at a welding shop but I do take on semi-large projects every once in a while. I'm tired of having little spatter burns on my arms and chest.

The biggest problem I have is living in Florida it is hot as hell. I don't want to pass out with a heat stroke. I know it will make me hotter and I actually want to buy something I will wear instead of wasting the money on something that will sit around on a hanger.

I'm a firm believer in the "get what you pay for" mantra, so price is secondary to performance and comfort.

Those ugly green ones from Weldas do ok. They aren't as good as leathers, but they aren't nearly as hot as leathers either.

I weld for a living and just use Riggs work shirts. I've never found the need for a welding leathers unless you're throwing spray with a torch or carbon arc. For welding duties just use good gloves and decent shirts.

You would probably be able to get by with a denim long sleeved shirt just fine...of course if you are doing a lot of overhead then go for the full leathers.

What type of welding do you typically do (process and type)?
BSX makes some nice stuff. The lincoln and miller rebrands are nice too. Then there is the old standby cheap green jackets. I use those for grinding to keep the others clean.
For tig and standing mild mig work, a nice fitted, thinner jacket works well. The problems can arrise when you are below the weldment and have lots of spatter.

I have a scar on the inside of my elbow where I was welding under a bucket IIRC and a piece of spatter went through the green jacket and straight into my elbow. Was not a fun day.

Well, the latest thing was I was oxy/acetylene torch cutting off a truck body. The spatter got me 4 or 5 times since I had to get under the damn thing since some a-hole welded it directly to the frame instead of bolting it. I have another one to do soon and want to be ready.

I don't do a lot of torch cutting on a regular basis but I obviously need something better than a long sleeve cotton shirt. I typically MIG weld and have gotten by the years generally unscathed with just a couple minor burns from molten metal spatter. The worst being a nice big glob in my shoe. That was the last time I wore sneakers while cutting or welding...

if/when i wear a jacket it's a green one.

otherwise just a long sleeve shirt...

i have a couple green jackets, one is a much lighter weight material than the other.
i bought both jackets and a pair of pants at local thrift stores. probably have $10-$12 in all 3

Startch the **** out od a good heavy cotton/denim shirt or green jacket and a set of leather sleaves

The green jackets are good for most welding. Actually just broke out a new one this week as my old one had done it's duty.

Hard to beat leathers for torch work tho. Well worth the cost.

I have Radnor's version of the green jacket, and it does fairly well in Georgia heat. I don't use it much, as I typically use a pair of welding sleeves more than anything.

I use black stallion welding jackets you can get them in about any color you want. I'm from ks and have used them in 100+/- inside the shop and outside of the shop. There pretty cheap as well, only costing about 20 bucks.

I hardly ever use any thing but gloves and shades for a torch. But that's probably out of stupidity. lol
