Full salination ? brackish ? city water? I have experience with some on each end of the spectrum.

I'm gonna subscribe to this subject because I am on city water and got a Berkey Filter, but it does not compare to the reverse osmosis water we were previously buying from Whole Foods. Not sure what their entire process was but it was great water.

I was overwhelmed by the under sink options and trying to determine what was worth the price, so for now we are sitting on this just-average gravity water filtering.

We have had two

The first one we bought from Costco several years ago - a Watts WP-4V. It worked well, but the 'faucet' started leaking. When you closed the handle, it started going too far back and you would have to move it slightly forward again to keep it from dripping.

I looked into replacing the faucet and a complete set of filters, including the membrane, and it appeared to be a better decision to just buy a new system

Started researching on Amazon and ended up buying their best seller/highly rated system by Apec. their Essence ROES-50 system. We have had this system for just over a year and so far so good. I did find out that if you wrote an Amazon Review they would give you a free filter set (3 filters) which in my mind partially explains the high number of reviews

The big difference between the two is the Watts system used an 'air gap' faucet. In an non air-gap faucet, the drain line from the membrane is plumbed into the sink drain. If the sink drain line gets plugged up, water can flow back into the RO system and contaminate the membrane although they do have a check valve. In an air-gap system, the drain line from the membrane runs up to the faucet and if for some reason the sink drain line gets clogged up - the faucett will start leaking out the discharge water which you can see and realize that something is wrong

Some areas require an air-gap by code, some don't. Personally, I think the air gap system is better but I do not have the drain line plumbed into the sink drain - I run it out the back of the house (check valve in the line) and we catch the water in a 5 gallon bucket to hand-water the plants. RO systems waste a lot of water

I just went to look up the Apex system we have and it looks like they have been caught fudging on their customer reviews. As I recall, they used to have thousands of reviews but now it is in the 200's

its well water. I will have a softener and a sulfer removal unit before it. the TDS was in the 200s and the sales guy that tested my water explained how important it is to get that number down for good coffee, ice cubes, etc. the sales rep is from kinetico and their RO unit was around 1500 bucks, more than I want to spend when I see lots of units for a few hundred. one plus I did see to the kinetico unit was they recommend filter change once a year, a lot of others that I see recommend twice a year. at ~75 a change out the longer life can make a $ difference.

Thanks.

Thats a crazy price - do you have a link to the unit?

The Apex I pictured above is considered a 5 stage system. There are 3 'pre-filters' - 2 of them are carbon block and the third is a sediment. They recommend them to be changed every 6 to 12 months. We have pretty decent water to begin with, so I change them once a year. Cost is $30

They recommend to change the membrane every 2 years on well water or every 3 years on City water. The full set of filters is $73. The membrane filter does come in different sizes based on how many gallons of water per day it can filter

A lot is going to depend on the quality of your water to begin with, but I don't see how it would cost $1,500!

Here are some reviews of that unit
https://www.consumerreports.org/pro...water-station-9673/user-reviews/#user-reviews

Looks like they put a fancy cover over it to hide the actual filters (who cares, it's unde the sink)

You would have to look at the specs to see what it filters out compared to the cheaper alternatives to see if it was worth the big bucks. ConsumerReports did a test on it, you may want to pay the $8 to get access for 1 month and then cancel

its expandable so you can add additional filter cartridges to treat different thing and it flows the water faster. something about water to water vs others that are water to air. i really don't see it being worth the huge price tag. the apex system above looks to be more along the lines of what i want.

thanks for your help.

I bought the APEC kit off amazon about 4 years ago. Great product for the price.
took my well water from 475ppm to about 15. Its literally pure water. I had to call them about an issue and they were great help.

about 4 months ago a kinetico guy came to quote me on a softener. He tested my RO while her was there. he was impressed

I just finished installing a nuaqua 7 stage system has a uv light on it and a thing to put minerals back in the water, my water tasted good before, tds meter that came with it said my water was 265 out of the tap and 190 out of the fridge after ceramic filter.
Flushing it out at the moment will messure tds tomorrow.

TDS reading after flushing is 31

The one i got has and electric pump on it , supposed to cut fown water usage and increase ouput pressure.
