With all the cheap china vises on the market I need recommendations for a decent toolbox vise, maybe 4 or 5 inch. I don't want to spend 500 for a wilton but I am willing to spend a little for a good for the money vise.

Has anyone bought an inexpensive vise that you was very impressed with?

The multi purpose vises are pretty handy for imports.

What kind of work?

What kind of box, will a heavy used USA one hurt it?

The box is a Matco. Not needing anything massive a 4in max opening would be minimum that I would want. I have a Record 2075 on my box at work and it is a very handy good quality vise. It is made in England I believe and I only paid $19.95 for it 20 years ago but they stopped making it. If I could find something similar to that or bigger I think that would be perfect.

Swivel base or stationary and what is your location? A few months ago another member asked a similar question and once I knew their approx location I was able to find him a Reed swivel jaw, swivel base vise and IIRC he got it for less than $100.

Those used Yost vises on Amazon look like a good deal.

I have a 6" Bessey vise from Home Depot, they are china made, but still pretty good quality - better than other chinese vises. Mine has served me well. The Bessey vises are about $60-$80 depending on what you get. The Irwin (chinese) vises from Lowes are junk...

Otherwise a new Yost is somewhere around $130. Don't know of any cheaper US made vises, other than scouring Craigslist.

Ended up getting this vise. Seems to be the perfect vise for my box. Haven't mounted it yet but when I do I will post another pic.
