Want something durable and good price. looks not as important. May want to add AC at a later date. 12 foot wall. Any ideas on type and size? I'm thinking maybe four total.

I like the awning type because I leave a couple cracked open all summer. Not in a high crime area though. They wouldn't work for a window ac though. Might also be worth a talk to a builder, mine are vinyl, but there are different grades and someone who installs them might be able to give you a better heads up.

I got inexpensive vinyl awning windows from Home Depot for my new garage. They are installed at a height that I can see out if I am close to the window, but a bit over eye height for most people from the outside. They let in light and allow ventilation and take minimal wall space. The ones that I got have good insulation and infiltration specifications and have low-e glass. If I decide to put a window air conditioner in the shop it will go in a new opening framed to fit it. I put similar awning windows in the last shop I built in the 1980s and I liked them.

Some great info. Yea I was thinking minimal wall and floor and maybe something like this and higher then normal. More width then height. Thanks!

If I were to build a garage or other workshop on a tight budget, I would gather "take out" windows from someone who was in the Window Replacement Business.

I sort of did the same thing. I'm building my garage to match my house so I wanted black exteriors finish. Which are about twice the price for pretty much the same white vinyl window.

I went to a building materials outlet looking to fill my window order but only scored one. I got a nice pella for one side but finding them to match was a nightmare.

Ultimately for the 2 end windows I just bought Jeld-wen builders series from Menards. Design and buy right on their website, super simple. If you just want some horizontal sliders and don't care about the finish, I would just go with a big box standard sized vinyl. They're just fine for a garage. I can't see spending thousands on garage windows, no matter how nice they are.

Go to your local habitat for humanity store (if you have one near). Lots of times they have brand new windows in custom sizes that were made and not wanted. It is a hit or miss deal, but could be worth the trip.

I only put in one window and the only reason I did that is because I wanted to install a window air-conditioner during the hot and humid months. I use the garage as a workshop and I have a lot of tools/equipment in it. I don't live in a high crime area, but nevertheless it makes no sense to "advertise" that you have a lot of tools/equipment. My thinking, right or wrong, is that the more windows you have the more likely it is you will have "lookers" trying to see what you have in the garage. I would recommend a bare minimum number of windows and preferably none at all.
