I have a metal shop that is heated with a wood stove. The walls are insulation with R13 and the roof has jack-squat! It's a vaulted (cathedral) ceiling, and I'd like to keep it that way. my rafters are spaced 4' apart. What kind of insulation can I put between the 4' rafters on the ceiling?

Closed cell spray foam would be a good option. Any other insulation can't be placed in contact with the bottom of the roof deck because it would allow condensation on that surface. You could add a vent channel just below the roof deck and then use a more standard insulation.

Lots of good info at GreenBuildingAdvisor.com and BuildingScience.com.

Here's one article that might be of some benefit: http://www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/blogs/dept/musings/how-build-insulated-cathedral-ceiling

Good luck,

Thanks! I should mention that I weld in this shop. not sure if that matters with the foam insulation being so high up. Also..... would this foam collect dirt, grim, and smoke damage at a worse rate than batting or someother insulation?
