I want something like the canvas and aluminum frame single car unit they sell at Costco except I want it to last as long as possible! It'll be used to store a long term project until I get around to building it, at which time it'll move to my attached 2-car garage. As always I'm looking for the best quailty at the cheapest price! Any recommendations? Pics would be nice too!

I have the 10x 20 that costco sell, finally went up properly last weekend after it blowing down the first time and damaging some of the poles, mainly due to me thinking "oh it'll be all right not fixed down overnight as its nice and sheltered" and a huge storm arriving unexpectedly overnight rather than any inherent design problem. Its going to house my 67 chevy c10 when i've finished working on the truck top thats in it now. Its set on some very old stone flags that predate my house and were the floor o the stables of the house that was on the site pre-dating my 1903 house. They’re about 4” thick so its well screwed down this time with anchor bolts. Its very solid and well made tbh.

One word of advice... tape the poles together!! where they join, if it flexs in heavy wind the poles slip out and then rip the canvas above..only down side if its not anchored right the whole thing takes off like alice in wonderland:)

Thanks for that. I need to get some duck tape on a few areas where it rubbed whilst thrashing about last time it was up anyway so I'll do the poles at the same time. All the key vertical joints are pinned together though with slip rings to stop the pins pulling out.

I have found that the round top portable garages tend to be better. I have owned a couple different kinds and never had a problem with the wind, rain, snow with this current garage. The weak spot of the garages with straight walls and pointed roofs are the joints they tend to fail or cause stress on the legs and subsequently cause the legs to buckle in the wind or snow. With the round top shelter I have found that it barely moves in the wind, and holds up great to the snow we get in Michigan. Snow might not be a issue for you but here it shows which shelters are better than others very quickly. I completely recommend the round top portable garages. Here is a site that carries the same thing I bought at Menards (Like Lowes or Home Depot)

They don't breathe, so moisture can build up and cause rust. I think this is due to the fact that they don't typically have a proper foundation.

Steel cargo containers. You can buy them in 20 and 40 foot lenghs, well at least those are the most common. You can get one in decent shape for 1000. We have several of them they work great, however you definitly want a roofvent or good fan or something for it.

If the car will be stored on a dirt floor put a large heavy plastic drop cloth (ground cloth) down. This will keep the moisture in the soil from evaporating and condensing on the bottom of your car during temp changes. Put bag of moisture absorber, pans of kitty litter inside the car interior and the trunk. Put the car up on blocks to get it off the ground as much as possible to keep good air circulation. You can get big oil drip pans from autozone and put a layer of kitty litter and or moisture absorber in them. It is possible to store the vehicle in a temporary structure but some precautions need to be made. Vents in the floor and ceiling would help combat moisture. The round top structure can be vented at the ground level, and on the ends as well with a little ingenuity.

Those may work for you in California, but if you live where there are substantial snow loads you will have to clear the snow off during the winter. I have had one collapse under heavy snow and damage my car. This was not the light weight model either.:( Incidentally, I live in Ontario..

Thanks for all the info guys! I'll probably go with the 10' x 20' Costco piece. We're moving into a new house w/2 car garage. I'll be kicking out the wall on that one (accompanied by a thread w/pics, of course!)
I live in the Bay Area so snow and wind is a non-issue and I don't need to worry about rust in the temp garage 'cause my Model T roadster is a rust bucket anyhow! We'll be storing other **** in there too but it should only be through the summer. I plan to build a rather large permanent storage building in the backyard later this summer.

I have the rounded Shelterlogic from Northern Freight also. Its the 12'x20'x8' high model. I put down about a 12" layer of Item 4 and put a 3/4' CDX plywood floor over pressure treated 2x4' sleepers and 2x10's and tar roofing paper. I had trouble with the auger anchors going in so I had to dig 12" holes, put the augers in then fill them in with cement. My 3 neighbors and I had it up in an afternoon. The whole shebang cost less than $1000.00 My neighbor has a similar setup that has survived 10 years of southern New York winters and is still in good condition.
Thank You
