I never even knew about these until about a year ago. Doing a car restoration now and want to use rivet nuts in several places thru sheet metal. Some might be tight quarters. What is a good quality piece? Not looking for gold, but I don't want something that might get me through one job. Thanks!

I'm assuming you're talking about a rivnut and not a rivet. I have one I picked up at northern tool for 22 bucks that seems decent I don't use one enough to get one of the super nice ones.

I've purchased several (5 or 6) FSI (Fastening Systems International) 'D-100 Hand Riveter' as we use them in our shop every day. These are hand operated hydraulic units and they work great. The kit comes with 8 pullers for 6-32 to 3/8-16 riv-nuts along with pullers for blind rivets. Look on e-bay for good deals as that's where I found all of mine. The kits that I found are all kits that were made-up for the military and have the designation D-100-MIL-1.

Here's the link to one on e-bay, but you can find them cheaper if you're not in a hurry... http://www.ebay.com/itm/FSI-D100-MI...173738?hash=item4d506367ea:g:ujMAAOSwA3dYPNoE

Good luck!

I started with an "el cheapo" harbor fright gun and it was a POS. Upgraded to a Marson and love it

I have both. The HF IS a POS, but it works. The aluminum rivnuts that come with the HF tool aren't worth as much as the throwaway plastic baggies they come in, and I think that was the main source of your troubles.

Still, for simple tasks with smaller sized rivnuts, it's hard to beat the Marson kit.

I got the Matco one when it was on promo and it works well for me. Not really compact, but if I have to, a bolt and prybar work to get them started enough to run the bolt in.

ASTRO to the rescue. The one mentioned above in the Amazon link works great. The rivet nut is one of the best inventions of the last 10 years. Just bought a grill that uses them extensively and they work fantastically. Much superior to the sheet metal screws they replace.

ASTRO has this fastener covered. They make cordless electric and pneumatic rivet nut tools for larger users.

We're coming out with an improved pistol style design for tight spaces in a couple months. But up to 1/4/M6 capacity.

If you want over 1/4" and confined space, you need an industrial air or electric rivet nut setter like the ones we make.

I bought a kit from jegs that was priced well and works great. It also came with a bunch of inserts of different sizes. They have metric as well.

I have the HF one it worked but the 1/4 -20 ss rivnuts were a ***** to set. My BIL has a Astro for Aviation use it was a night and day difference. So in conclusion the HF works but it is a definite "only need to use 1 time a year" tool so works fine for me. If using this thing even one time a week go for something nice your hands and stress levels will thank you.

A bolt, nut and washer will also set them in firmly. Also helps to take a three cornered file and cut a couple of "V" notches in the flange........helps to keep them from turning next time you go to undo it.

I have a thread setter like this one. I have used it on aluminum and steel. I have never used one. I have loaned it out to probably 5 different people that have never used one. It still works good to this day. I have only used it for here and their. But real soon I will be using it for my whole car!!! I have even used it for some 3/8" stuff.

The new tool will include what sizes?

I have to look mine up and then I'll post it. I did some homework on finding a decent one, earlier this year.

Anyone have luck setting 1/4-20 rivnuts with one of the cheap pilar type tools? I only need to install a few. If the cheap tools **** I'd rather set them with a bolt, washers rather than spend 50 bucks or more on a tool I might never use again.
Thanks

My cheap HF pliers type did about 90% of the way but couldn't do the last 10% on 1/4 20 SS rivnuts. So I had to finish them off with bolt and washers and impact. I couldn't start them with the bolt washer method as they slipped in the hole as I was trying to tighten it down. It was worth it as mine was less then $50 but I have used it for other purposes since.

They'll set aluminum ones, and start steel ones well enough to be finished with a lubed bolt.
