I do alot of bench work. I need some recommendations on a good polyurethane self coiling hose. Not the junk that Central pneumatic(Harbor Freight) , Amflo or Coilhose(acme) manufactures.

1) Need a good pigtal on end
2) Must have live air swivel on one end for tool
3) Thick wall abrasion resistant with good flexibility and memory
4) Good flow at least 3/8 ID"

Thanks:)

Go to a heavy duty parts place and get a trailer air line - 15' coiled ½" line with ½" NPT fitting on both ends. Run you around $40 and change typically and will outlast any shop hose on the market.

I've found Parker hose to be pretty good. I don't know what it means for a hose to "to self-coil" unless you mean one on a wheel with auto-recoil.

I put some photos of cross-sections of the Parker stuff I've bought (via McMaster and MSC) a while back. It's really good stuff.

Never saw a trailer hose in 1/2". Most of that stuff is tiny, like 1/4" and horribly rigid when cold.

One guy in the shop decided to be cheap and use it, it broke within a few weeks, plus choked his impact down considerably. Ours come from Navistar/International and are not what I would consider durable nor desirable for bench use.

Most of the air lines I've seen for tractor trailers are 1/2" NPT on the ends and 1/2" ID hose. And they're generally very good quality, and should meet SAE standards if they're used for brakes. That's more than you can say of the typical air hose at your big box store. Of course, I haven't worked in a heavy duty truck plant in 25 years, maybe sizes have changed. But looking at the aftermarket sites, it doesn't appear to be the case. Most of the stuff offered appears to be 1/2".

However, the 1/2" ones I've seen and held wouldn't be very convenient for what I consider benchtop use. They're heavy and bulky. But I'm one of those people that tends to despise coiled hoses in general. I'd much rather have a reel over the bench (actually over my head so it's mostly out of the way of stuff on the bench), or short hoses with a manifold within hands reach (under the front or side lip of the bench).

I've ordered all of my recent hoses from McMaster-Carr. The turnaround time is very quick, the pricing and shipping is quite reasonable, and they'll put together most typical configurations in any length you need. All of the hoses I have in active use in sub-50' lengths are from McMaster-Carr.

Do you really want a coiled hose, or do you want a self-retracting reel?

I actually got the idea from the Cat shop at a mine I worked at a few years back - they used trailer lines off of an overhead manifold at the benches.

1/2" is definetly an overkill, I am looking for something for bench use. in 5/16" or 3/8" ID. 1/2" inch is to bulky. Any other suggestions?

Personally I have never seen nor used a self coiling air hose that is better than Coilhose's PolyCoil or FlexCoil. Both are made of Virgin Polyurethane and are made here in the U.S. The ends are reusable and have a built in strain relief. The PolyCoil is straight tubing and the FlexCoil has a fabric reinforcement.

These things can be tied in knots and do not kink. Please do not confuse Coilhose's Polyurethane hoses with our Nylon Hoses. Nylon is cheaper but does kink and break. Coilhose does use only Virgin Nylon 11 but it still does not hold up like Polyurethane.

Please stay away from import Nylon Recoils as they will break the minute you kink one.

Yes I am biased as I work for Coilhose but I have been in the industry for over 30 years and I have worked and played with many brands of hose.

If you can find something better I want to see it.
