What is the 'best' door for a standard lawn tractor? By 'best' I mean most cost effective and best looking. I'm assuming it would be a french door type arrangement. Thanks.

Details... 42" lawn tractor is what i have. (Should size the door for 48" just in case).

This is for a detached garage potential build. Adding this door near the back of the garage directly accessing my lawn.

Your going to have to give a bit more information. Lawn tractors vary a lot is height and width. Also Where is this door lead to, basement, garage, backyard, or the drivers seat?

Is the door going to be visible from your house?(safety concerns?)

Whats the Siding?

The garage isn't built yet?

My parents shed is two doors of T1-11, works fine and matches the shed and pretty hard to beat price wise.

Putting a French door on a lawn tractor is not going to work well. Said door must be for a shed or garage to let the lawn tractor out? What size tractor?
I would defer to a 4' garage door if it's a smaller residential type lawn tractor.

If you're talking about adding an overhead door to your garage for the lawn tractor, you can get them narrower than the standard 7' or 8' widths used for a single car. My brother built a storage shed a few years ago and included a 4' wide overhead door on the side of the building for his mower, it works pretty well.

A french or double door will most likely have a threshold on it that you'd have to drive over, so that's one good reason not to use one.

8'x8' garage door.

If you are building a new garage, the 8x8 will be cheaper than a non standard garage door and when you sell the house one day the next owners can use it as a vehicle garage door, increasing property value.

Don't ask.
Mine fits just fine through 10'x10' doors. A 42" deck is probably close to 60" wide with the chute, maybe more with a bagger.
Choices would be a regular garage door, a sliding door, a roll-up door or pair of swing out doors.
As far as cost effective are you wanting initial cost, long term (maintenance and insulation)?
Best looking depends on personal preference. Most of the options are available in different styles from plain and functional (cost less) to stylish and ornate (cost more).
Depending on the garage siding or swing out doors might be custom made to be almost invisible.

Rollup door, like used in storage units can be had in most any width. I don't care for the look, but they are quick, easy and functional.
Or, use sliding door track and build a door that matches your property.

For a 42" deck you'll need at least a foot more door width as the 42 is cut width. The deck is wider than that, especially with the discharge chute down.

Another vote for a standard garage door.
I can't think of any good reason to use anything else.

I bought my Cub Cadet riding mower with 50 inch deck from a guy who bought it on an impulse - it was a factory/dealer rework that he got on a good deal - right time and right place, but he did not consider the width of it after he added a bagger. I bought it with about 2 hours on it for about 30% off the new price, but it had never cut any grass.

When I found it, he'd already bought another new mower and bagger and was just trying to get his money back out of this one. I don't care about bagging, nor was I width limited like he was.

Agreed. Wide enough for a vehicle, or as wide as you can fit in the structure. That opens up a lot more flexibility for future use.

Heck, you might even get a bigger mower at some point...

Best: An overhead door. And an 8 ft wide isn't much more than a 6 ft.

Swinging doors are in your way in an out building. Swinging doors that open out are also an issue when there is snow to deal with. I know, you think you're ony going to use this for a lawn mower... but the future may prove otherwise.

Sliding doors aren't typically weather / critter tight.

If you go with French doors make sure it's an out-swing. If in-swing, door panels swing to the inside and you'll need to keep a lot of space free of stuff to open the doors.
