I have bought 2 or 3 Craftsman Professional refurbished corded tools off of eBay. Last was a multitool. Complete with all accessories and about 1/3 the list price.

I am a believer in refurbished anything as long as it is from the factory.

Why refurbished and why pay shipping? Around here I can't walk through a garage sale or look on craigslist without tripping over basically new saws, drills, grinders for cheap. Seems all the wannabees who never use their tools anyway are trading up to battery powered box store ****.

Check out the CPO websites, I've got a number of 'refurbished' tools that appear they've either been used once, or not at all. Their definition of refurbished is returned, not damaged/repaired - people return things for all sorts of reasons. My experience has been exclusively with Bosch CPO, but I expect you'd have similar good experience with the other brands they carry - and they carry most major brands.

They have an entire CPO that is only refurbished from all manufactures.

Excuse me "Reconditioned"

garage sale season is over in this area and not really interested in any C-list hassles..
I might have to check local pawn shops now that construction season is winding down

Also I have seen some pretty nice circulars at pawn shops for give away prices. Might be worth taking a look, unless you need some of the fancy new options.

I can't see reconditioning old power tools. Buy a new cheap one and save money. My first circular saw cost just over $20 and it lasted 30 years. During that time, I built an addition on my house, and two garages from the ground up with it. And, for the rest of those 30 years, I used it to cut every piece of wood that needed cutting.

After 30 years, the bearings were so full of sawdust that the blade would stop almost as soon as you switched the power off. I tossed it in the garbage and bought another cheap one for about $30. This one has now given me almost 10 years of trouble free service, and if it gives me another 10 years, I figure it earned its $30.

I am almost positive he is not talking about reconditioned old tools, but factory seconds or ones repaired by the factory and resold.

The reconditioned/refurbished tools/electronics I have purchased are absolutely "like new" and come with the same warranty as the new equivalent.

I have a friend who goes to a lot of auctions, He has about 4 or 5 circular saws including a Skill worm gear that he bought for $15 ! He also has a stack of 7-7.5" blades about 6 inches high !! The $15 was the highest he paid for any saw.

OK, I'll bite. Exactly what does "CPO" stand for?

"Certified Pre-Owned".

Like the cars, it means used or demonstrators, returned to the factory and (usually) restored to operate like a new tool. There might still be some marks of use, scratches, etc, but shouldn't be dirty.

It also means tools and products that might have been shipped out and returned damaged in shipment, returned for warranties, recalled from warehouses and retail prior to sale for whatever reason, etc. Not all of the refurbed tools have ever seen a customer's hands. Shipments have been made with improper labeling for example, and have to be recalled from the supply chain. These can no longer be sold as new, even if the issues are corrected.

For as little as they cost now, I'd just buy a new one. Non-worm drive circular saws aren't much more than a motor and a blade, and the blade is what makes the biggest difference. A $40 or $50 Skil is going to be every bit as much of a reliable worker as a $200 "pro model" as long as you are running a good blade.

I have a Rigid 1/2 drill that is reconditioned, drilled thousands of holes with it and mixed many gallons of paint with it, no problems at all, would buy reconditioned again. I bought it at a Cummins tool sale.

Your local Sears Parts and Service Center sells reconditioned tools.. Sometimes it depends on their assortment, you may find a circular saw.

As stated above, CPO Outlets. They have several different websites that all sell the same items for the same price, but they each offer different set-ups/organization.

I personally like tylertool.com It's a CPO site, but I like the layout as this site offers new tools, CPO/Reconditioned tools, and it also hosts CPO Outlets "Clearance" Section. Let me just mention that reconditioned tools on clearance are CHEAP! Tylertool.com also has "open box" tools for dirt cheap.

EDIT: Also, I ordered an air compressor from CPO Outlets, and FedEx let it on my porch during a work day. Obviously, it was no where to be found upon my arrival home. I called their customer service department and was greeted immediately by a live effing person! The guy was friendly and polite, asked for my order number, verified my name, and then addressed me as Mr. Sch... the rest of the call. I informed him that FedEx stated the package was delivered at noon, but was no where to be found. He replied with "Ok, Mr. S, I'll enter this as a missing or damaged shipment now, would you prefer a refund or would you like us to send out a new unit first thing in the morning?" I was blown away. No questions asked, no difficulties, just 'how can we make you happy' kinda deal. I opted for a new compressor, which ended up being backordered, but should be here tomorrow or Thursday. Overall, their customer service was outstanding.

+1 on CPO.

I've bought 3 different reconditioned tools from them (chop saw, compound miter saw and a 1/2" drill). All arrived as promised, all looked brand new. Two of them were in original boxes that had been "reveresed" so the exterior of the box was now on the inside of the shipping box.

I shopped new on the Internet, new at the big box stores and the local pawn shops.

CPO was the best deal. I also saved on taxes because my state does not tax internet purchases, yet.

I also agree the telephone customer service is some of the best I've ever dealt with.

Ditto on CPO Outlets, I had good experience buying from them. I had to order lithium battery packs for my Skil cordless driver (rebadged Bosch) from CPO (Lowes didn't carry them) and it was quick and painless. Good customer service.

or you can go to tylertool.com, which is CPO's other storefront, and be able to view multiple brands at the same time, compare them, and check prices between the brands. CPOOutlets.com you have to view 1 manf. at a time. I prefer to shop "by category". Comes down to personal preference is all.
