I had considered hot bluing the 84 but have decided to have a go at powder coating it myself once I get round to making the oven. trying to decide on which blue to do it in as i want to get as close as I can to the original roundel blue

Be sure you outgas it all first. Cast iron turns out beautiful but it usually has trapped air and impurities in the metal. Keep us posted! :D

I came across this old thread. If the OP is reading this, I have a few queries regarding the Record No.23 vise as I have ordered one very similar to it with a quick release.

First, I must admire the brilliant restoration of the vise. Good show! From the pictures it looks like the main screw is quite hefty. What is its diameter?

What is the jaw width and the opening size?

What is the weight of the vise?

If you are here in the forum, I will appreciate your response. Thanks.

There is huge difference in the quality of the original English made Record No.23 that has been restored by the OP, and the Chinese made Irwin-Record 23 being sold these days for about $500. For example, the Chinese made one weighs only about 19 kg whereas the English one weighed 28 kg. That shows the reduction in the build quality.

Another vintage Made in England quick-release vise similar to Record No. 23 was Parkinson Model F No.7 shown here.

Dorset. England.
I'm a big Parkinson fan, got a No4, 3 No5, 3 No7, an 8a and an 9a, as well as a 7 swivel jaw, a few Handys, couple Samsonia's and a couple wood vices.

The main difference between the record 2x series and the 8x series (although from memory there is only 83's and 84's) is the 8x are cast steel or the malleable cast iron whatever you want to call it, stronger but more expensive to make. However all of these old British QR vices are good and always worth getting if they are in decent order and a sensible price.

Oh wow! Love to see the pictures of those Parkinsons (they are rarely seen).

Paramo 41 and 43 quick release are also similar to Record 23. But Record castings are a lot sharper than either Paramo or Parkinsons.
