Just picked this up from a guy off craigslist. He said it came with the house he bought 17 years ago so he doesn't know when it was originally purchased. I figure i got a pretty good deal for $50. Unfortunately someone tried painting it black at some point. I'll probably restore it later this year. For now it's gonna get put to use.

Not bad for $50.

Did you investigate the weld bead on the back jaw? Old crack that someone repaired perhaps?

Looks like a good useable vise as is.

It's not a weld bead. Its just some dirt and a poor iPhone picture/angle. You had me worried for a sec. I had to go take a look and verify haha.

Nice Vice, I paid more than that for my No3 Last year, with out a swivel base, ( which are actually really hard to find) and over here they are almost all you find.

You definitely got a good deal there. Looks like it's probably pre-Irwin too, so a proper Record, so to speak. They seemed to become more angular around the time Irwin took them over, whereas that has a rounded base and appearance.

Can anybody tell me a date range for how old this thing might be? What i have been able to find is that it's one of the earlier ones. Before they started saying "sheffield England".

HotRod: i'll let the Canadian and European members address the actual age of your old Record, but at $50 you did more than ok. that vise will last you a lifetime if you don't use it as a press or anvil and don't put any cheater bars on the handle to over tighten.

since it has the made in England on the back of the slide i'll take a stab at the date and say 1970's is the approximate date when it was sold new.

i'd love to see you drop that in an Electrolysis tank to take off all the paint and then put a few coats of BLO (boiled linseed oil) on it because all I ever see is blue Record vices. there's a great thread to learn how to do an "E" tank and here's the link if you want to check it out because it's not too difficult.

good luck

Fretters: I agree with DD that although that old Record factory is sad those artist's works are amazing albeit a bit twisted to say the least. i'd be a bit worried hiring the guy to paint my garage.

thanks for the link. i think i saw a few cast iron tubs there that need a new home??

SC: some of the newer Record vices say Sheffield, England and some of the better ones say made in England. the one that don't say Made in the casting like the OP's are Chinese Irwin vices more than likely.

do you have a picture or two from both sides of the $100 vice you are talking about??

SC: probably a 10-20 year old NOS that may or may not been made in England. i just sent almost that exact one to a member in Texas and he paid the $90 asking price and $40 more to ship and he is very happy with the vise.

your call because how often can you buy a NOS vise for $100 especially since you'll treat it well so it will last a lifetime.

Fretters: not sure of that. one time i parked in front of the police station that was in a big city in Canada and when i came back to the van after dinner with kids and friends the window was smashed and kid's backpacks were gone.

your call, but i'm guessing the ones i saw might be a tad difficult to move without a machine and through all that glass and water.

I definitely plan to get it all cleaned up this year. Currently Looking to purchase a house (there's another garage thread of it's own), but after that i'll be cleaning it up.

Jaw width is 4" and it weights 36.3lbs according to my scale.

Newest Craigslist find. Cost me more than the first one, but i'm not complaining. It's in better shape as well.

And here it is next to my 3VS. It's too bad whoever owned it spray painted it black at one point.
