Hi folks: What would be a fair price for a Record vise #5, Made in England?
The vise is in good shape.

$1 to $2000, markets vary so much it is crazy. I think it is worth what you are willing to pay for it, sometimes it is tough because the seller wants you to pay what they think it is worth.

Probably about half of this one, plus a bit, depending upon who wants it. English made will add a bit.

Record # don't make any sense, a # 3 is 4" . Unfortunately, the American vice thing has crossed the border, you are looking at a $100 for a 6".

It depends if it's an English made one or a newer Irwin (china). and the condition it's in. Look it over carefully under the grease and grime for weld repairs, looseness and grind marks around the jaws etc. A decent shape old English made one with the swivel base attachment is typically $50 -$100 in Canada. Without the swivel base $30 - $60. Weld repaired ones or Irwin, keep looking unless you really need a vise now.

Record numbers make sense compared to plenty of other vice manufacturers out there,
Bigger number bigger vice, they go from 00 to 8 in the standard mechanics series.

That's true, but why is my common as dirt #3, 4", whereas my #6 is 6" ? Records are great vices, every maintenance shop I've been in had at least a couple. I don't remember seeing any that had been welded up. The jaws on the other hand, have been toasted.

Another option for Canucks, is a later model RAE, they are built on the Record pattern instead of the earlier American pattern. They are made of cast steel.

And seemingly not quite the same as the original Record vises. My Paramo No. 6 is cast from the same Record molds and weighs over 100 lbs w/base (85 w/o). Not sure what material is used, as it does has a few chips.
