Record All Steel No 75

Hey all, first post to this page, new member and have not heard of this forum before.
Gotta say I do love Forums so much more than Facebook for info.
The reason I found this page is chasing answers and info on a vice that I will be taking home with me in the future.
It is my Dads and he is unwell and likely not long on this earth, this vice doesn’t really hold much sentiment to him, but I have memories of it always being in his little work area, it was already here when he moved into this house.
I will be taking it home to restore and place on the end of one of my benches, will likely see very little use, but it will hold a place in my heart.
I have seen another thread that helps with finding parts, but mine has a few differences to others posted on that thread.
mainly this is listed as “All Steel” same as brochure.
But the 75 is much larger than that in brochure.
Also others don’t have the word ALL?
All and any help I greatly appreciated.

That’s a cool old vise and even better knowing the history and connection to your father.
Way back I had a chance to grab my grandfather’s old vise but I was not into such tools then and missed my opportunity.

There are ways of removing that rust without grinding away the surface detail and patina of age.
Do you want to go that route or do you plan to paint it?

You have a lot of work ahead of you with this vise. I wouldn't take a grinder to it but even someone who is a beginner with vise restoration can easily use a wire or flap wheel on an electric drill to clean this little fella up.

We love pictures of restorations around here. Be sure to update this thread with your progress, questions, and anything else along the way. From what I can see in the pictures, with a lot of elbow grease, this vise will clean up nicely.

I do plan to restore the vice, a bit about me.
im a 52 year old Mechanic who restores cars as a hobby.
I have sand blasters, molases tanks, hot water tanks and tumbler/******** polish drums.
also have MiG and TIG equipment.
I will for sure keep thread updated, may not happen till we’ll into the new year though (longer the better as it means my Dad is still with us)

Hi @Boxhead , so glad to come across your post, I’m just about to start the same journey. My father passed away recently and I’m keen to restore his old Record 75 vice (same as yours).

I was planning to start with a wire bush and then have a go at pulling apart on the weekend to take to get sandblasted as the first step to restore it. Any ideas anyone has on this approach would be very welcomed!

I have also found a part diagram for a Record 74 /75 vice which might help you out.

Hey all, I had a go at cleaning up the vice with a wire brush today and freeing up the swivel base. It all came free and starting to move with a little WD-40. I think it’s starting to look better.
