Record No 11 anvil

Picked up this Record No 11 Anvil at the weekend for £25 at a carboot (yard) sale
Its in good condition & seems to have been only lightly used
Made in England & a handy bench top size to match my various Record vices

Does anyone have any old Record catalogues showing the various anvils that were offered in the range? (like the Record vice catalogue that's in the vices thread)

I have the same anvil. Bought it new in the 90’s from a shop that had them in stock.

They weren’t much money new as I recall (sub £20) but I have to admit they are seriously useful. I have mine on the end of my bench and use it all the time. Prevents the vice from being used for the same purpose!

The shop had about 4 or 5 sizes in stock, but the price went up quite considerably with size, and I remember thinking there was no way I’d buy a big one new. Don’t know how many different ones Record made, I suspect much more than I saw!

When I paid for mine, the kiddy behind the counter asked another assistant if an anvil was a ‘hand tool or a power tool”? I remember saying “Mate, if you can sell me a POWER ANVIL, I’ll buy one”!

I paid similar to Dave for mine, but USED a year ago. ($20 cdn).



Considering it is a Record the quality of steel on the face is quite soft. Mine had numerous ball pein “dings” in it. I realize the previous owner was an idiot as one should never hit the anvil face directly with a hammer intentionally but still........

Overall opinion: Cute. Functional. Small easily recoupable investment because of brand. Borderline POS though. Import quality from a reputable manufacturer.

The steel on mine seems to be fairly hard, so no complaints here.

But... the style of the logo is fairly late (for British made) and I don’t recall much of the later production ever being as good as the earlier. The ‘top end’ vices seemed to be good up till the end, as were the pliers, but hand planes detioriated over the years for sure.
