Been trying to look for information on any RECORD No. 2 SWIVEL VISE MADE IN ENGLAND - I just purchased one from an old timer who retired and wanted to find out how to determine the year it was made.

I already had a Record No. 2 in my garage - but it is NON-SWIVEL
This one HAS the swivel base - and I love the screw type design of it - where you lift and turn the screw (or bolt).

Cannot find anything on the No.2 swivel base - is it rare?
Cannot wait to clean this up.
Thanks guys.

I have several Record vices but not a No. 2. In fact I don't think I have ever seen one. My No. 1 has 3" jaws and my No. 3 has 4" jaws so I'm assuming a No. 2 has 3.5" jaws.

As for determining the age, here are my, from left to right, Nos. 1, 3, 4, 8 & 6. I bought my No. 4 new in the mid 70's. It is the only one on which the dynamic jaw has a flat face. The others all have a horizontal ridge cast into the dynamic jaw just above the handle. I know they are all older than my No. 4. All of mine have holes for mounting them to a bench. The newer ones have slots. Yours being a swivel base would mount differently of course but I imagine the vice itself would be the same. Nothing definitive but I hope this provides a few clues.

I've loaded my photos to my computer - hopefully I can load them here.
I'm planning to take it down to bare metal and leave it that way - let's see how it comes out..
If I choose to paint it blue - which blue paint do I get that resembles "Record Blue"?
I know Wilton's are Rustoleum Verde Green - but have no idea on Record's Blue.
Thanks again...

Probably go with Hammerite smooth finish blue? I've been looking into paints for the two No.6 vises I'm fixing up (pictures here) although I think I'm going to steer away from blue, mine aren't super old or anything, might try to find a cool colour enamel for them. That old Record paint is tough as nails!! Did some wire-wheeling on the vises yesterday to clean off rust and ******, and hit the paint with it, (knotted wire cup on an angle-grinder) and it didn't even scratch it!!

I'm 1st going to soak it in my baking soda solution and my battery charger doing it's work - after I take it apart - hopefully it is simple and not a hassle to take apart and put back together - then start on the wire wheel - wish I had the bench wire wheel here - that's better than the drill.
I guess no one ever saw a Record No. 2 swivel - huh?

I have a #2 swivel base Record same white color as yours. I picked it up at the Courtice flea market for $5 :)

Also have a 3, 4 and 5. They seem to multiply.

Oh FWIW, the Gray swivel bases fit the Record vises, I have my 4 and 5 on gray swivel bases in the garage.

Lillredex - it's funny I emailed that article to myself yesterday - but wanted more info.
Thanks.
Maybe I have an unusual # 2 Record - that would be nice..
Too bad there isn't any information on the vintage Record vises that were in production...
