Record no.23 vice

Hi guys, I just bought a couple of great uk made record vices off eBay, bloke wanted £20 for a no.25, and £15 for a no.23. I'm keeping the number 23 as my everyday vice, but I'm thinking of replacing the jaws. I've seen replacement Irwin Record jaws for sale on eBay, but are these any good? I've not got a huge amount of faith in the new Irwin stuff.

Also, the old screws are 18tpi, but will the new Irwin's be compatible? Or are they replacements for the new lines only?

I have replaced the jaws in several 1960's and 1970's Record vices. I purchased them for about $30 to $35 per set (hard jaws with screws included) at Acklands-Grainger in Canada. You can also purchase soft jaws. The packaging for both types had a "Record" logo on them. You can probably find a local supplier but if necessary just do a search for Acklands-Grainger. They have a very extensive catalogue.

The newer vises aren't as good as the old record ones. But you can't really go wrong with a set of jaws. Your only other option would be to have some made by an engineering company. The fixings should come with them, but if they don't there is usually a fastenings company in most large towns. Pretty sure the is a westgate fastenings in Ipswich.

Yeah there's Suffolk fasteners in Ipswich that we use. I suppose I could make a pair at work, only thing is I'm not sure how they get the texture on the jaws? I'm pretty sure the new Irwin jaws come with the screws, I was just wondering if considering the new vices are far eastern, they might have metric threads? Not sure.
