BP: how do you like that little portable sandblaster? nice tips about safety and health issues when sandblasting. i'd also use a mask and even an old full face shield for spray painting too. i'm going to paint some of my smaller items inside a 5 foot tall crate I picked up and some members even used old cardboard appliance boxes to keep the paint from going everywhere especially if it's windy.

looking 100% better so far just getting it naked so keep up the great progress and remember to take lots of pictures.

Sandblast unit is great for blasting stuff outside. I could have done these in the blast cabinet, but as heavy as they are, they would have beat up my cabinet a bit. Anyway, I think I paid around $50 for the hopper/gun combo. I have three of them, so it's easy to keep them loaded up and ready to go with different media.

BP: any chance you might have time to post your small sandblasters on the new sandblaster 101 thread? I like the idea of having different types at the ready to blast as you need to. just curious do you ever have any issues with leaving material in your blasters getting moisture or any other issues?

your vise is looking great. I wasn't sure if Record's replaceable vise jaws can be flipped. can they and still look ok?

keep up the great work

No issues yet with media getting too damp.

Yes, Record's jaws can be flipped and look exactly the same. Worked out for me.

Looked into buying some of KMScott's jaws, but my original jaws are in pretty good shape. Linky in case anyone else is looking for some - http://www.wiltonviseparts.net or for non-Wilton vises - http://www.benchvisejaws.com

I did pick up some Wilton copper jaw covers - http://www.ebay.com/itm/390638287801

I posted finished pics in another thread, but here it is -

The dark blue paint that I initially bought was LOUSY so I ended up using the next closest shade I could - a metallic blue - I actually prefer it. Has a bit of pop to it.

BP: your old RECORD vice does POP. I wouldn't buy new jaws for it because those look great unless you need more grip. with more grip and teeth on the jaws so you risk marring up the piece you have in the jaws which is usually ok if it's something you are going to toss I suppose. I usually can get a pretty good grip with the copper jaw covers and if you keep them clean and fairly flat I bet they will work as well. your call and great job seeing the potential of that OLD GREY RECORD and turning it into like a HOT ROD.

congrats.

JZ: I don't think I've commented on your Avatar, but I always smile seeing it before reading your posts. just bring a bigger BFH and GET R DONE was definitely the OLD SCHOOL thinking.

cheers

Thanks, Drives. There's kind of a double meaning for me, because while I agree with your sentiment I also find my tendency is to "use a sledgehammer to hang a picture" -- spend more time and energy on the tools than on doing anything really useful with the tools :lol_hitti

JZ: I'm sure BP will agree if he remembers your Craftsman block 1HP restoration thread and how you did an amazing job restoring that. I for one think you did a terrific job so if any job comes your way where you finally need to USE it or any of the other tools you restore i'm sure you'll be fine.

I tend to prefer the hunt and finding more than the spiffing or even using them so we all have our niche.

BP: did you say you were going to buy another vise to restore or that you did already? you have skills and I bet your car restorations are terrific too.

Looks like you found the same color paint that I used :)

Ouch, those are expensive! I recently made some aluminum jaws for my Paramo No. 6 and another vise. I milled some pockets into them and epoxied neo magnets in them to hold them to the steel jaws. The magnets are rated at around 50 lbs and hold very well---the key to their strength is that the magnets have iron return paths so all the flux goes where it you want it. Cost was around $15 for 2 sets (plus about 30 minutes of spare time).

That looks excellent! Good choice of color for sure.

Thanks. I'm pleased with how it turned out.

I like to color so much that I used it when I "restored" my old heavy duty made in China engine stand, too. It was school bus yellow to start with.

Thanks, Drives. I'll hold off on new jaws now that I have some jaw covers.

I appreciate the search, restoration, and using 'em, too.

I will buy another one to restore. I'm actually in the Chicago area (Valparaiso, IN) right now visiting family and have been looking on Craigslist. Anyone see any good deals here?

http://chicago.craigslist.org/search/sss?sort=rel&query=vise

http://chicago.craigslist.org/search/sss?query=vice&sort=rel

If I pick one up today, I would probably partially disassemble (weight limit of 70 lbs for USPS) and ship it to Italy to restore.

Anyway, thanks for the kind words. Vise looks good, but it's seen a lot of use and abuse, so it's not perfect.

Very nice.

I picked up a pair of aluminum ones on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/371518142249. They should work fine.

BP: here's a Polish made Bison that the guy is asking $175 for and if it's a 6 inch wide jaw it's probably worth it. since Bison are not that common or well know they usually don't command this kind of money, but I've yet to know somebody that found or bought one that doesn't like theirs. I've only got a 3 incher, but i'd buy another bigger one in a heartbeat if it was a good deal.

http://chicago.craigslist.org/sox/tls/5566581245.html

just look it over closely because some vise abusers (users) have broken off a piece of the moving jaw (the back jaw is the one that moves). also I've seen one with a broken piece of cast off on the underside of the base. for $125-150 if this has a 6 inch wide jaw and it's in good shape would be a nice addition to your shop. for $75-100 i'd buy it locally and RUN out the door and you might know I don't NEED a vise. if you still have my email you can ask questions on vises you find or PM me if you need help.

cheers and welcome back to the US if only for a little while.

Thanks for posting. Just got back from Lake Zurich, IL. Just a bit north of Chicago. Picked up a pair of Wilton bullet vises -- a very nice 4.5" with swivel base and a 3.5" fixed base. Now I need to disassemble, box, and ship to Italy.

Will post pics.

Here they are. The 4.5" one has brass jaws. The 3.5" one has plastic jaws. Guess I'll be picking up new jaws for both.

Paid $375 for the pair. No damage to either. How did I do?

BP: if you are happy then i'm sure we will be too. since neither vise has the original jaws and they are not cheap. I might have paid less, but you were on a time crunch and they are decent OLD SCHOOL wiltons.

I know they will clean up great and hoping the original screw holes are not damaged which usually concerns me when original jaws are missing or replaced.

good luck

Yeah, I really didn't have time to look around for deals. I wanted a decent larger bullet, and I picked up the other one just for sh*ts and giggles. I guess I could have haggled with the guy, too, but I didn't bother.

From what I can tell, the 4.5" bullets with swivel bases go for around $300 if they are in good condition.

Thanks
