It doesn't look too abused and the 5 is one of the rarer sizes, but its only a standard mechanics vice. It would definitely be over priced here but then 95% of the used market is Record here. It should weigh 53lb if you go per pound pricing.

Thanks. I looked on Ebay UK, and thought exactly what you're saying...it would be overpriced there, but there don't seem to be nearly as many listed here.

Going rate here is $50 - $60 for that vice. I see them higher but not often.

I could never see the need for a rotating base.

Could anyone enlighten me as to where they are essential?

Al.

If you are filing or grinding in a crowded shop you can't always change your position to line yourself up with the best position to comfortably and accurately move the file (grinder etc.) in the line of work. Swivelling the vice allows you to line the work up to your position.

I've been doing about 20 hours of just this type of work and I'm constantly rotating the vice. In a 5' sq area I have a 10 bench grinder, a mig welder, 3 - 4.5" angle grinders with various grits of flap and stone, 3 die grinders with various bits and my file drawer that I'm using 4 different files out of. I stand in about a 3' sq area and can reach all this stuff and use all of it one at a time. If the vice didn't swivel I would have to move around the vice and have all these tools spaced further apart linearly along the bench to do this job and still only be able to change my angle to the vice in 180 degrees. With the swivel you can change the angle 360 degrees from one standing position.

GMan: since you just bought a nice 5 inch Morgan or something that looks like and is pretty stout i'd say pass on the old Record. it's a nice vice, but i'd wait for a Record Quick Release, a bigger vise than your morgan or maybe a swivel jaw or Reed that you can find for the $150 range give or take.

not saying this Record 5 inch isn't a good vice, but it's not that unusual since you probably don't NEED another vise.

I'm certainly not in a rush, but I do need a couple of larger vises before too long. I have a shop set up in my basement, and I have my 8" Yost there now for a larger vise.

I've also been working to finish the shop portion of my pole barn. I call it a pole barn, but it has a poured foundation, and concrete slab floors, so it's kind of a hybrid. The building is 40x64' and I partitioned off 24x40 as a shop (with a man door and overhead door for access between sides). That area will be heated (radiant in the floor), cooled (mini-split), have hot and cold running water, a full bathroom, etc. I'm at the point where I'm close to building the first built-in bench which will have at least one large vise and maybe two. On the barn side I'm setting up a welding table area and want a larger vise for that as well.

That has me looking for another 5-6" vise in the short term, and I wouldn't be surprised if I add another bench or two in the shop that will need vises before long. It's a long-term project, but it will be a small machine shop where I build custom pistols when i retire.

On top of all of that, I still don't have a vise that needs a restoration, so I'm looking for a suitable candidate for a first try :D

This is where the first bench is going:

This is a slightly earlier picture, but it gives a little perspective. The enclosed area is the bath and utility closet. I expect smaller benches on either side of the door, and maybe one on the partition wall. One of those might turn into a coffee/microwave/mini-fridge area, but other than that, it's space for benches, toolboxes and machines!

GMAN: that shop looks AWESOME. WELL DONE SIR. you certainly have a great reason to NEED to buy a few old big or good vises (vices) and wish you lived closer because i'm selling off a few of mine.

I bet you'll have no problem finding a good big vise(s) to restore. :D

Did you have a build thread in Garage Gallery? if you didn't you should and if you do you might put the link in your sig line so we can click on it to see what your COOL garage and shop looks like.

good luck
