Record SQ6 vise

Hey all,

New member here. I have recently come into possession of a Record SQ6 vise which appears brand new. It has a swivel base marked 4/5 SB. It’s missing one of the two bolts that lock the vise down onto the base. The bolts are what I believe to be British Standard Whitworth. I can’t seem to locate a replacement anywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

You can find them on various online stores, search for "BSW" bolts.

I have some Record and Paramo stuff with those goofy threads. I ended up changing to standard thread pitches, I think by helicoiling them. Been a while.

Thanks for the reply JZiggy. I’m waiting to find a way to confirm the pitch before ordering something. Standard pitch gauges only let me see that it’s close to a 1/2” course thread. I was afraid to try and tap the swivel base because the threads are so close. I suppose I could drill the holes oversize and tap them for larger bolts

Hi Badger07.

Firstly, yes, the thread is likely to be Whitworth, sometimes known as BSW (British Standard Whitworth).

Think of BSW as being the British equivalent of ANC.

Measuring the thread is easy. First measure the diameter. It will probably come to just under a standard Imperial size.

Secondly, measure the screw pitch. You can buy a screw pitch gauge quite inexpensively, but you will need one that includes Whitworth pitches.

Once you have the thread, you could try an “off the shelf” bolt, but it’s not going to be an exact match for what you have.

You may find spares available, but not from what’s left of Record as they’re only interested in selling new / imported / poor quality vices. There are other firms that supply parts.

Personally, I’d just get a local engineer to turn one up for you. Starting with a hex of the appropriate size, it’s an easy turning job.

I believe some (newer) Record vices have metric threads, but not any I’ve worked on!

Hey thanks for your reply Dave455. It looks like by the time I purchased the right pitch gauge or ordered the matching bolt I may be better off to take a trip down to my local machinist shop. Like you said it’s probably a straight forward job for him. (Man has been in the game for half a century)

best of luck on the bolt and taking it to a good machinist might be money well spent. If I recall my Record Vices correctly that SQ6 is a quick release version. have you tried that out yet?

Thanks drivesitfar, the quick release works flawlessly on this vise. Hopefully it continues to for a long time
