Okay, I'm at the end of my rope. Looking to have a mini split installed in my garage. 24K BTU w/heat pump (pref Mitsu or Fujitsu for better heating performance). This is my last attempt to locate an installer that is competent, professional and reasonable. The panel is less than 15 feet from where the outside unit would be, and the inside unit would be less than 15 feet from the outside unit (just a vertical run on the same wall).

History: Installer 1 - no show. Installer 2 - showed, but no quote. He tried to convince me to install radiant tubes (how that helps with AC, I have no idea). Installer 3 just gave me a quote for $9300 for a Mitsu P series 30K BTU unit. Even tried craigslist, but that involves another layer of nonsense dealing with that crowd - not going there.

If someone wants to convince me to DIY, I could use the encouragement. I wanted this done sooner than later, but not at the price above. Don't know much about electrical, but willing to learn. Don't have a vac pump and various tools to deal with the linesets/pressures, but for $250 I can get them from viot. Again, don't know what I'm doing with them, but I have a neighbor that used to work on AC equipment and I'm sure he would help if it only took a few hours of his time.

In the hopes that this helps someone else in my shoes, I found a good DIY resource for mini split installation today.

There are a couple of very useful threads in there detailing where you can get reasonable cost tools, several detailed installs demonstrating potential pitfalls, etc. Plan to spend a day reading through information in there, but when you're done, you'll feel much more confident about ordering the bits and bobbles and going DIY.
