RectorSeal - Minisplit quick connect

Noticed in my recent contractor mag that they added a quick connect for refrigeration. Sized for mini-splits.

Doing a google -- SupplyHouse sells them. They work like a SharkBite .. some sort of install kit is recommended.

Talked to my installers about the pro-press system (crimped) a few weeks ago when they were at the house .. they use the system for water but not for refrigeration. They said expensive and had some problems.

Anyway -- this is another step towards making these things easy to install and for the "pros" to not mess up.

I'm not at all surprised. AC systems around the world are sealed with o-rings, and the retention forces required to hold the pipe in are well within the reach of a sharkbite (using lowercase here in a crappy way to get away from a specific brand). As I see it, they'd just need to swap out the ring for one that's HNBR, and in fact, I was looking through the Viega Megapress catalog last night, and it seems that they have an HNBR system as well. The regular Megapress is EPDM, and the -G version has a yellow HNBR ring.

Love Propress and Megapress, just not the MaxiPro. Too many problems. I'll wait for the technology to improve on it.

Sorry - another old thread but I searched. I had a copper pipe in a mini-split crack on me and I lost the flare adapter. Contacted Pioneer and they actually recommended this Rectorseal - 3/8" - PRO-Fit Quick Connect Union. Only $19 and said to test up to 850 PSI. I suppose with these you don't even need to make a flare. Easier for the DIY crowd, but probably not good enough for the pros.

But I have to say - I watched the YouTubes and they are convincing. But it's very hard to find ANY field reviews of them, however.

part of me wants to buy a cheap mini and use these and one of the pioneer no pump down kits and see what happens

As I mentioned above, this might work with HNBR o-rings. Unfortunately, the datasheet doesn't state the o-ring material or temperature rating. Just pressure rating. Would a fitting like this handle the heat near the compressor?

This rectorseal fitting is interesting. I need to replace a coil in a Daikin mini split and made a hack/DIY mistake as I have virtually no play in the lines to cut off the old flare and add a new one.

That Rectorseal fitting looks like a future leak to me. There's a good chance since most of these mechanical fittings have some type of plastic or rubber that will breakdown sooner or later. Even flares develop leaks more often than brazed connections. I have seen flares become loose from hundreds or thousands of heat cool cycles. Brazing is always the best choice if there is a choice.
