Having been on both sides of multiple restaurant closings I can tell you a lot of what probably happened. First they have been losing money for a while so a lot of the stuff is broken or near worthless condition. The things like the dishwashers and ice machines are usually on a lease including maintenance. Then they will ship everything of use to the other restaurants in the chain if possible. That is probably where the stuff like plates, glasses and silverware went. Then you have the managers and employees basically looting the place. This is why so many places close with zero notice. They don't want the place to have zero value.

Man just had some RL last night. Hate that I liked it. Someone tell me where I can get a more beastly plate than this for $40...

I guess I'm not surprised, but I am shocked you can get away with that after a well documented advertisement showing what "was" for sale. I doubt that particular location was utensil-less, for example.
What are you going to do sue them? They are already bankrupt. Yes it is pretty unethical of them to have things not present that were in the pics. It is pretty common though. We were emptying one place and I told my brother to grab a few things that didn't belong to the restaurant and they literally had his name on them. He only grabbed a couple of items. He said he felt really weird about it because the people that bought the place were in there at the same time. He was afraid it would get a little heated if he started walking out with stuff right in front of them. I also left some stuff that was mine at a couple of the places for the same reason.

So since RL lost their ***, the OP in that thread should too (by means of their shady practices)?

If the OP decides to get involved without getting informed I really have trouble feeling very sorry for them. We bought a place several years ago and afterwards found out all the Tiffany lamps were leased. Unless they have a specific list of what goes and what doesn't some ad with a very generic description isn't much grounds to claim you were ripped off. It isn't brain surgery they should've asked some questions. The low amounts that are being bid shows everybody knows the deal.

I think that the bids will be low; bidders planning on taking only the most valuable stuff they can get out ( and even want ) in the slotted time. Others will need to be paid to actually empty out and clean the property.

That is how I first became involved as a teenager.

Any restaurant serving the most expensive and perishable type fare to those who come in to ******** a feedbag is asking for it. I'd imagine the gluttony was on a par with the "free" buffet at casinos.
I feel for the workers who were no doubt exploited until the bitter end.

RL was sold to a Private Equity firm many years ago. As said, they then saddled them with the debt and leased them the restaurants back, while investing nothing back into the company. Then a shrimp company in Thailand bought an interest, or maybe all of it?, and "encouraged" them to buy tons of shrimp, from them, making menu changes. The endless shrimp may have been the final nail in the coffin, but they've been circling the drain for years because of mismanagement.
If you remember Boston Market, they too were bought out by a PE company with the same results.

...and nothing of value was lost

it's sad when businesses go under, but national chain restaurants are stupid. i don't think standardizing and cheapening culinary expression benefits anyone.

I do like the convenience of being anywhere and being able to get consistent food with known prices, expectations, etc.

I actually wouldn't like only mom & pop shops on a road trip, because I'm not looking to add an hour each stop.
