Red mark from city explained

Received my plans back from the City, could someone explain what they are asking for?

My roof will have 1 foot of over hang off the side walls. The city is asking say "Underside of overhang must be 1 hour rated or 1/2" sag resistant gypsum board.

Most overhangs I see here in Phoenix I see the bare press board, what are the other options the covering the underside with drywall?

My house has 2 foot stucco soffits.

Non fire rated overhangs may be fine according to code, unless you are within a certain distance / setback of the lot line and or neighboring structures. Or it could be a special (new) code due to being in a wildfire zone or something.

Are they asking for the fire rating on all sides of the building or just 1 or 2 sides? I would also ask if soffit vents are allowed.

Sounds like they want it boxed in with gyp board or something like Hardie's soffit cement board: https://www.jameshardie.com/Products/HardieSoffit-Panels

Where we are in San Diego county is considered a "Wildland Urban Interface Area" and because of the wildland fire risk we had to box our eaves; I used the solid (no vent holes) Hardie product for our structures.

I ran into this. My set back is 5', with a 3' min. and anything between the 3' and 5' area needed to be fire rated. My guess is this one foot overhang puts you in your fire rated zone. I asked what material was acceptable and was told gypsum board. Metal was not acceptable for my P&Z office. In my case it was my gable ends, so I just removed them from my plan. I would ask them fro clarification.

The planning dept. is always the place to ask questions, They know the rules and the exceptions.

Use exactly what they ask for. 1/2" sag resistant gyp board.

This is it!! They only requested it on one side, on two different designs... that side is less then 5 feet from property line..

I will confirm with the City tomorrow morning as the rest has instructed.

Why are you asking us this? Why not ask the city? If the city is telling you to do something, and you're unsure of what they're asking, then you need to ask them for clarification, not the internet.
