Red oxide primer?

So, I'm working on my old jeep and have some items (trans cross member, bolts, mounts, etc) that need stripped and primed. I've read about red oxide primer everywhere, but never really seen it in a store. Should I expect to find that in spray cans at the hardware store?

It should be with the rest of the spray bomb primer. I've seen it in quart cans before though.

It's the BROWN primer that you can readily find in places like Home Depot, Menards, GhettoZone, NAPA, et al....

Sounds like Rustoleum "rusty metal primer."
Only use that on metal that has some rust. It doesn't stick as well to shiny metal.

You might want to try a good epoxy primer,I think you will be happier with the results.

If you want an epoxy primer w/red oxide look try Southerpolyurethanes. They have one. I have used their black epoxy and really like it.

Talking about surface preservation, paint doesn't stick to shiny metal very well. The metal should have some profile to it. The ideal surface profile is sand blasted due to the texture, and the cleanliness doesn't hurt. Working in ship repair, I have seen sailors sand a bulkhead down nice and shiny and then prime it. Come back the next day and you can peel the primer off in sheets!

Metal can be shiny and sanded with 80 grit which most paint manuf. say is plenty of surface profile.

Rust Opium is good But I like Carbit Epoxy primer. A local company out of Chicago.

Red Oxide is the old lacquer based primer that was used years ago. If you really want to prime something and get it to last get a good 2K primer. Some of the old school primers are not really compatible with the newer paints of today. When it comes to paint, don't go cheap. If you want to go cheap, give MAACO a call.

The best bare metal primer is epoxy primer and it is a 2K primer. Southernpolyurethanes has an epoxy primer that has the red oxide look.

One of the PPG DPLF range is red oxide colored: DPLF 74

I like the southern poly primer, but you have to have the metal perfectly clean or don't bother.

The Rustoleum rusty metal won't last as long, but does pretty good, especially when the surface is a bit dirty still.

I've used the Rustoleum "rusty metal primer" for years and it works well.
That said keep in mind it is not water proof and requires a top coat to make it that way and as of recently it appears they "Rustoleum" has changed the nozzles on their bug bomb spray cans and they don't work as well as the previous version.
