Redesigning AC System

I am redesigning my AC system to install a 5 ton unit with 3 zones. I originally bought the 5 ton unit because I went off of a AC chart that said 2500 sq ft is covered by a 5 ton unit (I live in Texas). I have since calculated the CFM to be 2200 and everything I've read says that a 5 ton unit will only cover 2000 CFM. Will the 5 ton unit still work?

Designing an HVAC system starts having accurate load calculations. For residential, that's a Manual J calculation. For commercial, that's using typical ASHRAE design criteria.

If you want the short simple answer, most 5 ton fan coils with very minimal ductwork will run ~2200 cfm, but you'll have maybe two tenths of external static.

2500 sq/ft is typically considered borderline for dual systems in Texas. Especially if it's a two story and in the southern part of the state. Our 2400' house in Houston had a single 4 ton and it ran like a mother in the summer. $300+ electric bills back in 1995 when power was pennies.

we have 2300 sq.ft and two three ton units. I prefer the two units for the back up it affords. Highest power bill is $190 a month during the summer in Houston.
