Redneck door repair

So, I came home last night from a long crappy day at work (3:30pm-5:30am), shut my door, and the door cracked, window exploded, damn near cutting my wrist off.

I find out nobody stocks 30" exterior doors in town, I have to special order it. I figure if I'm doing that, I'm going to get one made exactly how I want. The door was in bad need of replacing anyway, so it's not like it's a tragedy.

So, I need to get a door that works until then.

I cut the door in two where it cracked on the one side, drilled 3 3" deep 5/8" holes on each side, and glued dowel pins in.

I jigged up the door as best I could, and glued and clamped it, using ratchet straps to hold it tight.

I was a little worried about still having some flex (let's face it, this is NOT a permanent fix), so instead of glass, I installed 1/4" plexiglass and trimmed it out.

It's certainly not perfect, but it beats having plastic duct taped over the entry for 2 weeks...

Looks like that door wasn't doing you any favours and was in need of replacing!

Are those OB puller chains you are using with the ratchet straps?

Nissan, you do good work--many would have let a piece of plywood function as the door and used the back door for 2 weeks.

Much too nice a repair for "temporary!" I would have applied a scrap plywood panel to each side of the door... I have plenty of packing crate plywood.

Me either. It sticks a little when it's humid, I suppose it got soft from flexing a bit over the years? It's a 26"x21" window, and 2/3 of it went sliding right by my wrist, then hit my ankle and shattered. Lucky for me, I wear steel toes at work. If I was in my normal shoes... I was almost scared to look at my wrist, but I didn't get a scratch. It definitely wakes you up.

Wait a minute! No way will that repair last any time at all. You used a Craftsman miter saw and "everybody" knows that Craftsman power tools are ****. Whew! Good thing I caught that.

That repair is much to sophisticated for a redneck....a real redneck would have used duct tape..........after he blasted it a few times with the shotgun because he was pissed off.....

It's not worth my time or money to build a new door. I also want a window in it, although not like this one. A windowless door does no good unless you have a windowless house.

As for the repair, it will probably last longer than you realize.

And left it there for 2 years as the OSB rotted away. (coming from a long line of rednecks, I should know, I've actually seen this method in use)
