It looks like I am in need of redoing the concrete floor in one room of my garage. It is roughly 1,000 sqft and its pretty knackered

I got a quote for $12k, which seems awfully high for pulling up and putting down new concrete. What should I know, or ensure that they do to ensure a permanent solution. They were pretty vague with work to be done.

Some depends on where you are at.

I got a quote last year to R&R 900 square feet for $3,800.

Your contractor should be willing to give you very specific details if you ask for them. If they can not or will not, then they probably don't know the answer to your questions and you probably need to find another contractor.

If I had to do it again, I would have insisted on rebar instead of wire mesh.
12 grand is pretty high.:scared:

Thanks for the info. More knowledge the better when contractors come to do work and concrete isn't something I know a lot about.

Can anyone recommend someone in the central VA to contact

In the Michigan area 4" thick concrete with wire mesh goes for $3-$4 per sq ft put down by a quality contractor depending upon how hard the area is to get to. Wouldn't include breaking up and removing old stuff.

Since you're in Central VT, edit your profile to show your location. It helps other members give you more accurate advice.

You mention 1,000 sq/ft of concrete, how thick will it be ? 4" thick would be about 12 1/2 yards while a floor 5" would be 3 more yards and 6" is going to call for 6 more than the 4" floor.

How much work is the breaking, removing and disposing of the old floor going to take ? How much room is there to work ? Can they get a skid loader inside or is it going to be done by hand ?

They may not want to do the work or may be bidding high thinking you have the cash if you want a concrete floor taken out and a new floor put in. Any radiant heating being put in the floor or anything else special ?

If you are capable of some serious back breaking work or can rent/run a skid loader, you might be able to save yourself a ton of cash.

the concrete slab will be 50'x21'x4"

the quote doesn't say anything about rebar, or mesh.

It is a totally open area and there is a roughly 8'x8' garage door opening. So I would say that there is plenty of space to work
