Redoing staircase treads

The bottom 3 stairs of my staircase have a shorter tread than the rest of the stairs. About 7” vs 10 1/4”. The rise is consistent throughout the staircase 7 3/4". I’d like to replace the last three treads. The last 3 treads don’t seem to be attached to the stringer so I think the project may be straight forward. They are currently fanned out - wall side of the tread is wider than the handrail side. I’d like to stick with the fanning concept. The minimum width of the new tread will be 10 1/4” and the max will be whatever I can fit. Step #1 will occupy whatever space is left at the bottom of the staircase - thinking large platform.

So my question is where do i begin dismantling the last three stairs? Any pointers on the process of rebuilding the stairs?

If you can get behind the stairs you will want to remove nails in the riser that hold it to the tread. Then remove the nosing on the edge of the treads. I like to take a large chisel and drive it into the end grain of the tread to split the tread and remove it in at least two pieces. If they are fighting you, take a sawsall and get the blade under the tread and above the riser and cut any glue blocks free.

Part two; as far as rebuilding the stairs, the easiest way for you do to it, is to built boxes that sit on top of each other, each one progressively smaller to become each step. Cap each box with your tread material, which looks like oak.

Wolfman - great tips. I can get in behind the staircase - but my drywall guy just redid the sheet behind it. I might just take a recip saw to it from the front.

Great call on building boxes for a staircase. Looks a lot more straightforward than building a stringer.

Any tips on removing that knee wall to the left?

remove the treads and just add to each riser and its side return the number (") required.

If you remove the knee wall, can you go with a square platform per your drawing?
Current code doesn't like wedge shaped treads.
