Looking at this -
00918403000_20091010080112061

Looking at buying some regular depth 1/2 impact sockets to go with my deep well - looking at these to also allow use with my 3/8 air ratchet (yes - I know it doesn't really require impact sockets). They look like a neat idea - not much more added height like normal adapters. Would also use them with normal sockets.
These are Grey Pneumatic. Anyone have any experience with these?

that's a different take on the problem.

are those dots little magnets to hold them into place? Just looking at them I'd wonder how well they'll stay where they're supposed to without a ball detent.

Description:

Features and Benefits

* Designed for impact or hand tool use
* Magnetic retention device keeps the adapter attached to the socket
* Adapters can be stacked if additional drive reduction is needed
* Sleeve type - low profile
* Lifetime Warranty

This reducing adapter set helps to reduce larger drive sizes down for use on smaller drive tools. The set contains 938RA 1/4" Female x 3/8" Male, 1138RA 3/8" Female x 1/2" Male, and 2238RA 1/2" Female x 3/4" Male.

Yes - it is magnetic. Although I can't imagine it being as strong as a ball detent. But that might be an OK compromise for the reduced height.

If they are those "rare earth" type magnets, then they should be plenty strong enough.

If they are the same kind thats in hard drives, they are definitely strong enough. If you don't believe me, take two magnets out of a hard drive and let them slam together on your finger. You will probably get a blood blister.

I have about 6 sets of hard drive magnets out in my box right now
I subscribe to the smash theory of data destruction when I get rid of an old hard drive. Disassemble the drive - clamp the platters in the vise - and break them. No one is getting any data off my old hard drive.

Having said that, you don't want it to be so strong that you have to pry the adapter off of the socket.

I break those magnets up and use the pieces for other stuff. A small piece of one is not that strong, but 2-4 small pieces(like on these adaptors) should be just as strong as a decent non locking ball detent.
