Just picked up a Reed 105R. Been casually looking for this model for a while and this one came up today locally. Am interested in knowing what color it was painted when it left the factory. Have not looked for the date codes yet. Let me know if that helps answer the color question. Thanks In advance.

I believe I've read that Reed vises were from the factory, black with red lettering. I have no idea if year affected the color scheme. You may get more eyes on your question on the vise thread.

Looks as if the only red vise that style is the utility vise.
I've seen whole shops painted the green color you show, also have no idea if it was a requirement or just or just the color that was used to freshen the shop.

Thank you. New to the user group so thanks for the suggested redirect. Started to tear it down and it looks like the vase paint may be grey. Build date 11/49.

I have had 'R' model Reed vises that were painted with a thin, black low gloss paint.
But I think the majority of the 'R' model Reeds I. have or have had were grey.
The latest Reed vises, the one's with the 'oval Reed' badge all have been grey, those that I have acquired.

The Reed R series vises are one of the very best, tight tollerenace and long life vises around.
I have an oval badge 105-S, so the equivalent to a 205 in the earier models. This 5" vise is a go-to vise for me.
So easy to use and free of slop and excess play.

Thank you Pierce. Appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Grey sounds like the way to go. I agree, the R series Reeds seem to have been well engineered and built.
