I have the opportunity to buy this vise for 225 maybe a bit less. Is it worth that price?

Looking for my first vise - I want something very hardy and long lasting to pass on. Do I pull the trigger?

I’m going between that and the 204 1/2 just not sure which is the better idea. This one is 175.

Is there an “ideal” reed model to look for?

Even at $225 if you did not like you could make money on it, you will not lose on the deal.

Those are all good vises to own. The 1C has pipe jaws. My money would be on the 1C.

Ok so you think the 1C for sure? The 3.5 inch jaw isn’t limiting at all? I guess what is .5 an inch in the end

What type of work do you do? But if we are talking these 2 choices I would go the 1C. The .5 is not huge difference.

Sorry to hear you are sick - mainly home workshop stuff. Some welding , bending etc. nothing too massive but would like to be able to put decent sized material into it

I am open to other ideas - just want something solid and long lasting

The combo Reed vises are more sought after and since the size in the 2 is so small go with the 1C. If not good enough sell to fund the vise you want / need.

Deals are out there on larger vises, a little over a week ago I bought a C1 Wilton from craigslist. $400.00. I have yet to mount it on the bench since I've been locked up in the house. The C1 is a 4 1/2 combo and the 835 that is mounted is a 3 1/2. The C1 has not been used and the machined surfaces just have light rust.

I’m not sure why these quotes are sticking around.

That is really nice too. I’ve seen some of those - didn’t know they were good ones. As I said I’m totally new to it - if you have any models / brands to watch for I’d be appreciative!

Some reading on vise brands (use the search) on GJ should give you some brands that are well made and those that are not. How well it holds up will depend upon how you treat it, even a well made Reed or Columbian will suffer if abused. I've two vises (Reed #32 and Prentiss #10) that are both over 100 years old (estimated here) that were purchased for $150 and $50 (respectively). Deals are out there but the speculators/flippers have driven the prices up considerably. Price also depends upon your location and how long you're willing to look.

Reed are among the best brands and best quality of vises. The C series is their best line. The pipe jaws do not get in the way of your work. Get the 1C, or buy them both. Then get a couple dozen more like the rest of us :ROFLMAO:
Hahah it is already seeming that way… never knew I’d pick up another addiction… I mean hobby cough cough

Buy it, use it and if it doesn't suit you needs then you have experience to know what to look for in the next vise. You can always sell it for what you paid for it and you have free use of it for while you have it.

lg
no neat sig line
