In the process of restoring a Reed 2C vise I ran into a problem. During disassembly the pins that hold the pipe jaws in place did NOT want to come out. I used a punch and ball peen hammer to pursuede them to finally dislodge. When they finally came out they were badly bent and there were metal shavings that came out with them. I didn’t understand why those shavings were there at the time, but do now. After stripping everything down and painting the various components it was time for reassembly. And for reassembly I straightened the pins, lubricated them, and tried to drive them through but they wouldn’t go more than about halfway through the pipe jaws. I removed the pipe jaws again and looked through the holes for the pins. And I was surprised by what I saw. Apparently when they milled the holes in the pipe jaws they went about half way though and then stopped, flipped the jaws around, and then milled half way through again. The problem is that the holes don’t exactly meet up in the middle. There’s an offset, and so the pins run into an edge when they come to the middle.

Has anyone else run into this problem? Since the jaws are hardened, the only way that I can figure out how to resolve the problem is to use a long rat tail file to smooth out the offset of the holes.

Does anybody have any other suggestions to address the problem?
