Reed 4C

Hello all, 1st time on TGJ. I enjoy reading the various threads that are on here. I recently picked up a Reed 4C from a fella in east Texas. I went there to look at buying an anvil (which I did), and he had a very large vise sitting next to it. They had both been neglected for several years but will both clean up nicely. Attached are some pictures of them as I first saw them and a couple additional pictures of the 4C.

Congratulations, you found one that many consider a holy Grail vise. Post it up in the main vise thread in general tools. I also have a 4C and it's a beast!

99: welcome to GJ. as you might have seen while you were waiting for a good reason to join and post up some pics of your finds that there are more than a few of us that love old tools and especially vises (vices).

I had a member find a few old Reed 4c's in a warehouse in Houston several years ago and we worked out a trade deal and he sandblasted this one and put on a 2 or 3 coats of BLO (boiled linseed oil). it was pretty rough to start with and it was missing jaws that he had made, but it's finally going to be mounted on my steel bench soon as I can drill 4 holes in it's 1/4 inch plate top.

I also found a big old REED 4c up here last year that I need to do some spiffing up on, but for now it's just waiting and doing a little work if I need it to on the homemade stand.
