I recently acquired a Reed 104, it is in good condition minus the collar (garter). I read most of the posts and almost everyone has milled their own, since i don't have the tools to do so what other options are out there besides looking for a true replacement?

Isn't that vise still posted in Wood Dale IL for $30? Something looks really wrong with the spindle on that vise...

Bingo! that is the vise i bought. the Spindle is sticking out because the collar is missing, that is the part the keeps the spindle in place when opening the vise. Closing is not an issue but i dont want to manually open the vise.

You should be able to pick up a collar with a set screw at any well stocked hardware store.

True, but if one didn't have a split nut, won't a collar make the vise at least usable?

Thank you for uploading the draft renderings, i think the first one is what i require, 1 1/2 core with a 2.225 diameter.

Good luck Jose, I made this one a while back, it was for a 106 model. If you have a local machine shop then maybe they could make you one. I can not help you except provide pic's of how I made mine and ad a drawing. Good luck.

I sm not a vise guy so I don't know but isn't Reed still in business. Are any parts still available? We had a 4 1/2 inch Reed at work that was indestructable. Somebody once took it apart for cleaning and lubrication and was concerned when he found the "broken nut". LOL!!

I did a quick and cheap fix for a missing split nut on a 104R . As you have probably found you could buy a whole vise for cheaper than a machine shop will charge to make the piece. I posted it up in the repair 101 thread if your interested.

In the FWIW category, I have an ancient Reed 104 I bought over 30 years ago. It was rusty, frozen solid and had a foot broken off. I soaked in in kerosene for a few days and then worked to get it free over a week or so. Eventually it came apart. I took it to a local welding shop and had them weld on a replacement foot, then weld the whole thing to a plate. I've been using it ever since. It's a real survivor!

Yes. They are soft lead I poured onto a cake pan. Then cut in half and fitted them to the jaws. I should have removed them for the photos.

I was using it to unscrew gun barrels. With the broken foot I figured it would be a much stronger mounting. I no longer use it for that purpose, just general use now.

Just an update, i painted the vise and pretty much just waiting on finding a split nut or making my own based on the last post i read.

They are still in business, but they haven't had those sorts of parts in years. A fellow member here told me that he bought every vintage part they had on hand years ago.
