Hello folks

I am trying to find any information about my massive Reed No. 308 Vise. This is a true beast and I am looking for anything such as manual, parts list, old brochures, anything pertinent to this vise.

I have spend some time on the internet and frankly have come up with nothing...which surprises me. Thus, I am hoping that maybe someone may have some insight on the GJ...

As always, any information would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks all and have a great weekend!!

Some more searching will show some of the old advertisements but I have never seen mention of that one before! 8" Reed swivel jaw, my new vise I would sell a kidney for!

A very nice vise you have there burgie. What makes it a little unusual is that it has the movable back jaw in combination with a fixed base. Most of the swivel back jaw vises made also have a swivel base. Your vise with swivel back jaw and swivel base would be a 408. There are a lot more Reed vises in the 40 configuration than the 30. Of course 8" vises in either pattern are quite difficult to find. Ed.

Tedster, I have the #406 but I want the #408, I just don't know if they made one.---The ADs say they might have.

But I'm like you Blue, I've never seen a #308.---Zoomie has a #305 swivel jaw, and that is the biggest 300 series that the ADs on Dayid's site shows.

The #408 is a 300 lbs. swivel base, so I would say the #308 is somewhere around a 275/280 lbs. stationary.

Excellent score, Burgie.

Burgie - Congrats on a big one. I have never found one out there. I looked at my literature and do not have any info on the 300 swivel series. My guess is that it dates back to the teens to early 20's. My catalog is an early 30's and they had all 400 numbers for the rear swivel jaws. Just curious where you got it and if you know where it was used.

Bergie: i might make new jaws or have some made that really spiff up it's look, but nice to see it found a home where a guy knows how to treat and use a big vise. WELL DONE SIR!!

CNG: yes putting a dollar bill next to a 8 inch Reed is like putting a penny next to a 4 inch Wilton bullet. :D Burgie knows how to show off that BIG UN doesn't he??

The good thing is that beast is heavy enough it would be really hard for someone to steal it without making a LOT of noise. I'm green, really green, (did I say green?) with envy! :D

Interested in any literature/info on the 300 series too. I just picked up a 306, which is the largest vise I have now, but of course not quite the size of the 308 here.....

I also have to figure out to recut the jaws, as there's no indication of the serrations left, and they're the hot forged in style. (non-replaceable)

Octopus: first off welcome to Garage Journal where we like our vises (vices). also looks like you are sort of a neighbor that might own a few vises. the Reed 306 is a great vise so if you have any pictures please post them on the big vise thread and here's the link

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44782

i usually click on the paperclip just above where we write our posts to post pictures sort of like attaching pictures to an email so ask if you have any more questions about the vise maybe on the big vise thread or the Vise Repair 101 thread that gets a lot more member's eyes.

here's the link for the 101 thread http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252830

personally i'd make or buy some copper jaw covers or aluminum ones for your vise and you shouldn't have any issues holding anything. also i know that vise is pretty big, but don't beat on it with a hammer and use it like a press or an anvil. i'll trade you a chunk of RR track for a tool if you need something to bang on.

can you see the copper jaw covers i have on my REED 2C in the picture? they are made by Wilton and they are 6 inch so i'll need to trim them up a bit to custom fit them to my 2C or they would fit perfect on your 306.

cheers

Yup, got plenty of RR tracks for that use. :)

I have some overly large aluminum jaws on my Starrett vise, I'll probably move them over to the Reed at some point. I'm considering machining the old jaws out, then installing a set of more readily available replacement jaws. This is no amazing beauty of a vise, it's pretty beat (rear mount is somehow broken off !!), so nobody get their pants in a bunch over a little healthy modification.

Kind of makes you wonder if a 309 and a 409 exist, I would like to to get my hands on any 9 in Reed or hollands
