Ok so I found there called a radial arm drill. What would someone use something lik this for? Would sure be cool if a guy could rig it to put a boring bar on [emoji6]

It's for drilling big holes in big things. With the radial arm it can be positioned over something that's too big to pick up and put on a table.

Not a mill, (Could you imagine the run out and slop in the X/Y )

Radial Arm tools have always been compromises to do "throated" access work.

That table with all the t-slots is one of the coolest things i've seen on here in a while.

The machine itself would be a solution in search of a problem in 90% of shops.

For true; if one were given that space-hogging monster, moving and installing it would be an expensive proposition. Then, chances are, it's 3-phase.

There's a similar machine for sale locally for $1400.

They have their place. I’ve used one to drill multi-inch diameter holes in steel stock several inches thick. Set the correct speeds and feeds and squirt some oil on the bit every little while and let it do it’s thing. That unit is interesting as it predates the standard round column design. Probably in the area of 9-10,000 pounds of machine and less than 5 hp.

BTW, there is a nice looking aircraft oxygen tank sitting there on the base. Would be nice to grab that if it could be had at a decent price.

I ran one that had a box table (the part with T-slots) that could tilt. It had a worm and sector gear to adjust the tilt.

They do flex around when drilling larger holes. Mostly if the drill bit isn't ground perfectly, but even a brand new bit will cause flexing when the down pressure is significant.

Around here they usually go for less than scrap value because 95% of people will never need one and the difficulty in moving them. I saw an 4' American go for $200.
