Reed Vice Mess, how to fix?

I purchased a Reed R series 104 1/2 vice at an auction sight unseen. Jaws and casting looked great so I thought it would be a good vice. Got it home and I’m shocked at what I found. Someone apparently broke the screw and replaced it with threaded rod! I’m shocked at this point that anyone would do something like this. And I’m guessing parts are impossible to find. So how do I fix this mess? I’m guessing order some acme rod and a couple nuts and fab something up? I really hate dishonest people! Thanks

You might find one with a broken jaw for cheap and do the old "take two to build one" routine.

You’ll have better luck posting over on the vise repair thread. Also try the vise parts swap thread for what you need. I’ve actually had pretty good luck on eBay just by searching vise parts. I hope it works out for you!

Fabbing a vise screw and nut is for some just time and money. Since you understand the concept, go for it. If you weld the nuts to the mounting base, be very careful to protect the ID threads from weld spatter.

Others don't have the equipment or the experience and might pass on their expensive lesson to the vise parts thread.

Is the original nut still there? Is it in good shape or did the threads not match and it got F’ed up?

Nut is gone. They cobbled up a plain steel nut. I will try to post a pic when I get home.
